American Experience: Last Days in Vietnam

April 1975. During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, the South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. The United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in the country. With the lives of thousands of South Vietnamese hanging in the balance, those in control faced an impossible choice - - who would go and who would be left behind to face brutality, imprisonment or even death.

At the risk of their careers and possible courts-martial, a handful of individuals took matters into their own hands. Engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations, they waged a desperate effort to evacuate as many South Vietnamese as possible.

Includes both the Academy Award®-nominated theatrical release and the extended AMERICAN EXPERIENCE broadcast version

Factual portrayal-I was there
Review by \Goldfinger\ on 08/18/21 review stating Factual portrayal-I was there
My long time, life long friend from the Vietnam days, contacted me and said I believe you are in the PBS documentary Last Days in Vietnam a (Pilot Story). The clip he sent confirm his guess. After purchase and viewing, it was unnerving four decades later to relive that moment Ive buried with years of sleeplessness. My family along thousands of other were vacuated. You see I was on Garys last helicopter trip to the (flagship) Blue Ridge. As a result of documentary, I will share with my adult children, grandchildren, family members and friends that I swore never to tell until now. A factual portrayal - I was there.

Last Days Vietnam Heroism

The efforts given by these American men and women, in spite of the lack of official support, is nothing less than heroic.

Had to see how it all went down...
Review by Sndwnr111 on 06/15/21 review stating Had to see how it all went down...
Since I was onboard one of the carriers at the time, the USS Coral Sea, I was not priveledged enough to realize the extent of the operation. All we knew was that we were evacuating Vietnam. Our squadron (VF-111, the Sundowners) flew air protection for the choppers going in, to keep the North Vietnamese at bay. My best friends mother sent me clippings from the local paper, but I still never quite understood the magnitude of it all...until now. Unfortunately for us, a lot of people still think of the Vietnam War as ending in 1973. I have had more than one argument stating my case, with most writing it off as no big deal. I did quite a few twenty hour shifts, keeping those birds turnin and burnin and here I get to see what we accomplished, the fruits of our labor so to speak. Next we need one on the Mayaquez incident...another small exclamation point to a thirty year war.

Shame on Congress
Review by Jd^2 on 07/17/20 review stating Shame on Congress
Almost 5 Star except for slight apparent political bias. Wonderful photographic documents and outstanding historical/documentary comments on the final days in Vietnam. However, the way the US Congress treated the S. Vietnamese was dispicable as well illustrated by what happened in this documentary. My only gripe is that Rory Kennedy used only Republicans in Congress to say that Congress wouldnt support USA aid to --- military, supplie, food, aid in evacuation, whatever to --- rebuff the Paris agreement violation by N. Vietnam, not even help evacuate. Few remember I imagine but after the 1974 Mid-terms the Democrats held nearly 2/3 Majority in House and 61 Senators in the Senate, complete control of the Congress. Shame, shame, shame especially as Kennedy got us into the War and Johnson escalated it and oversaw the most American solder deaths, also not well remembered.

A period during the US Vietnam involvement rarely told
Review by Arnold on 07/17/20 review stating A period during the US Vietnam involvement rarely told
In most documentaries about the US involvement in Vietnam, the days before and during the April 1975 evacuation is frequently glossed over. Producer Rory Kennedy fills this gap and delves deep into the final days before the US hurriedly and dramatically conducts an evacuation that moves many Vietnamese out of the country before the seizure of the North Vietnamese, but also leaves many behind. This riveting and Oscar nominee for best documentary captures the bungling, but well intentioned ambassador, the loyalty of the military police to the Vietnamese who were employed by the US, and through 8mm footage uncovered by Kennedy in her pursuit of researching the story. I am a former AP reporter in Vietnam in the late 60s, and I can not only confirm much of this story, but also feel the tensions of what happens when it is so easy to get into a war, but so difficult--but this afterall is Kennedys purposes in crafting this important piece of history.

Vivid Reminder of The Past
Review by Rico A. on 07/17/20 review stating Vivid Reminder of The Past
This program must be studied by all serious students of American foreign policy. Avoidance of war and taking a long hard cold look at reality about American foreign intervention based upon moral considerations is driven home here.

We left people that helped the U.S. behind. Didnt send them supplies to help defend themselves. Sound familiar? The only issue with the product, two disks with the same presentation. A theatrical version and an extended broadcast version. The extended broadcast would have been enough.

After all these years, to finally hear these stories was truly eye-opening, and somewhat heartbreaking. Yet there were so many brave and resourceful people who managed to save a great number of people because it was the right thing to do.

My heart was broken
Review by Olguita on 07/17/20 review stating My heart was broken
The tears flowed as I watched the documentary last night. I saw exactly what my Vietnamese stepmother had described trying to get on one of the last military flights out with my two year old half brother. Being half Vietnamese and half American, she knew what he would go through if they stayed. She was lucky her uncle a Vietnamese soldier literally pushed her into the belly of the plane to get them out. They left with only what they had on, my brother in pajamas, no goodbyes/hugs to the family they left behind. Such a sad story for so many who went through the same situation.

Vietnam was before my time. I learned a lot as a result of watching this movie. The footage is incredible. The first-hand accounts, of men who were there at the U.S. Embassy, is incredible. Watch this movie and learn.
