Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson

JACKIE ROBINSON rose from humble origins to cross baseball's color line and become one of the most beloved men in America. A fierce integrationist, Robinson used his immense fame to speak out against the discrimination he saw on and off the field, angering fans, the press, and even teammates who had once celebrated him for "turning the other cheek." After baseball, he was a widely read newspaper columnist, divisive political activist and tireless advocate for civil rights, who later struggled to remain relevant as diabetes crippled his body and a new generation of leaders set a more militant course for the civil rights movement.

Featuring intimate and revealing interviews with his family and rarely seen photographs and film footage, this two-part, four-hour documentary tells the extraordinary story of an American icon whose lifelong battle for first class citizenship for all African Americans transcends even his remarkable athletic achievements. "Jackie Robinson," Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "was a sit-inner before sit-ins, a freedom rider before freedom rides."

Justin Meets a Legend
Review by Jo-Ann on 04/06/22 review stating Justin Meets a Legend
My grandson, Justin, is 13-years old and has played T-ball, Little League, and Club Ball. He has been reading about the history and former players of baseball. Jackie Robinson is just one of the legends I felt Justin should read about and understand his impact on baseball.

Ken Burns is a genius. Love all his series, but he literally knocked it out of the park with Jackie.

A Man To Admire!
Review by Coupon C. on 07/17/20 review stating A Man To Admire!
I, and my husband, thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful biography of Jackie Robinson! Now, this is a man to admire! I wish that this video would be shown in all schools, so everyone might learn how a man of character made his way into an exemplary life, in a time when few doors were open to a person of color.

Outstanding and touching retrospective on baseballs first 20th Century Black player. Robinsons life after baseball was particularly insightful.

Excellent autobiographical account of what life was like for Mr. Robinson coming up through the major leagues. Without ever seeing the Jackie Robinson story I would have to assume this is 100% better. Good job on this!!!

Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson DVD by PBS
Review by Ginny on 07/17/20 review stating Ken Burns: Jackie Robinson DVD by PBS
I really enjoyed this documentary. As a young kid, Jackie was my favorite baseball player. I didnt live in New York and I was never able to see him play. I really didnt know what he was going through. But, even though I was a grade and junior high school student, I knew he was special.

American Hero
Review by Dodgers F. on 07/17/20 review stating American Hero
I grew up in Brooklyn and my first game was July 4, 1947. Jackie played first base that day and my Dad had bought seats between home and first. I was 8 years old. 19 years later I saw Jackie at the San Diego airport and walked up to him. He shook my hand and we spoke briefly. Although he was only 47, he looked ill. His hair was very white and his eyes looked tired. His big hand was scarred. He was my hero and the thrill of meeting him is with me still. I had the chance to tell him what a great man he was. Great job by Ken Burns!

As a young boy, Jackie Robinson was one of my heroes on the Brooklyn Dodgers. Ken Burns brought so much more to my attention about Jackie and his life before and after his time with the Dodgers. If you have any interest at all in Jackie Robinson, this is the DVD you want to own. As always, Ken Burns does a fantastic job. Go buy the DVD!!!
