Masterpiece: Poldark (U.K. Edition)

It's 1783, and Ross Poldark has returned home from the American Revolutionary War to find England in the grip of recession and his beloved Cornwall on its knees. His father is dead, his family's land and copper mines are in ruins, and his childhood sweetheart is about to marry his first cousin. Feeling betrayed by everything he loves, Ross must rebuild his life, embarking on a risky business venture, facing new adversaries, and finding love where he least expects it.

Based on the novels by Winston Graham and set against the dramatic Cornish coastline, this striking saga stars Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) as Ross Poldark, Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the fiery Demelza, and includes a special appearance by Robin Ellis, who played the original Ross Poldark in the 1970s.

One of best tv programs - ever
Review by Pete on 07/30/20 review stating One of best tv programs - ever
The l970s version was truly outstanding. Based on season one, the newer version is even better, one of the best tv programs ever. The acting, directing, producing, etc., are all outstanding. Scenes that were good to very good in the original version are outstanding/superb in this remake. I wish theyd do the entire series of novels all at once so I could buy it my wife I could set aside a week (or whatever it takes) to watch it all the way thru (but if you cant wait, by the l970s version, as I did, watch that, then the remake as it becomes available). The male female leads in the 20l5 version are really superb. Been watching Masterpiece since the l970s, many outstanding programs, this is #1

Exciting period drama
Review by Angliophile on 07/30/20 review stating Exciting period drama
Poldark Season 1 is simply perfect TV entertainment. Poldark is a period drama of the late 1700s early 1800s set in Cornwall. Poldark isa dashing, charismatic, rebellious, and impulsive hero. Poldark has emotional appeal as a dutiful son and romantic lover who returns home from service in the British Army fighting to suppress the American Revolution only to discover himself bereft of his father, his inheritance, and his sweetheart. He undertakes rebuilding his patrimony and regaining his lost love. Poldark is filled with historically accurate drama about the conditions of both the impoverished lower class and the entitled upper class.

Poldark, Season 1, captured my heart. Aiden Turner is charismatic as Ross Poldark. The chemistry generated between his loves seems genuine. To experience to joys and burdens of this era is humbling. I am hooked on Poldark.

This is the very best production I have ever seen! It out does Downton Abbey by far for the directing, the acting and the background as well as the amazing story of course. Aidan Turner is wonderful as Ross...no-one better... and Eleanor is a beautiful and talented Demelza. I look forward eagerly to seeing Season 3. please bring us more of these amazing talents!

Lovely New Version of Poldark
Review by Classy M. on 07/17/20 review stating Lovely New Version of Poldark
My favorite is the original because the acting and casting is superb but I love this new version. Aiden Turner is wonderful (so handsome!) and the actress who plays Demelza brings a new freshness to the role. I love Dr. Ennis and Caroline - the actors who portray them are superb. Sit back, have a cup of tea, and enjoy!

Review by Gaynell on 07/17/20 review stating Where is the rest of Poldark?
I expected all of it... THIS picture of the DVD says the complete didnt say ONE SEASON ... SO, I ordered the Blu-Ray . When I received it, was ONLY ONE SEASON! I dont know how many seasons there are? The description needs to be clarified. HOW many seasons ARE THERE? When will the seasons be complete? I would not have ordered ONE SEASON.

Great stuff! Most re-makes tend to be gussied up rehashes. Not this time -- even the horse deserves an Emmy for this one.

A truely Masterpiece
Review by A B. on 07/17/20 review stating A truely Masterpiece
I had watched the 70`s edition and loved it then. Now I have watched the re-creation and again it is just beautifully done. I love the story, love the setting and love Ross and Elizabeth. It is not just a romance I am watching; I am also watching the history that Mr. Graham captured of that time and era. I feel I am living in that era of hardship, deceit and the politics of the time that have not changed a bit. He was a great story teller and it has been played very well!
