1913: Seeds of Conflict

1913: Seeds of Conflict examines a critical yet overlooked moment of transformation in Palestine, long before the Balfour Declaration and British Mandate period usually considered the matchstick for today's ongoing struggles. It was a time when identities were fluid and few Arabs or Jews living there could imagine the conflict that would engulf their region for the next century.

1913 explores the crumbling of Ottoman rule and the rise of Jewish and Palestinian nationalism through the words of those who helped shape history: Albert Antébi, a Sephardic Jew known as the Jewish 'pasha'; Ruhi al-Khalidi, the scion of a Palestine family and Jerusalem's elected representative to the Ottoman parliament, Khalil Sakakini, a Christian schoolmaster and voice for Palestinian cultural autonomy; and Arthur Ruppin, a German Zionist who opens the Palestine Office to strategize the shape of a Jewish homeland to come..

I had watched this on WITF and was glad to purchase it for family to watch. It is clearly a situation that could have been handled better by the European Jews when they came to Palestine. The Jews who had been their since the destruction of the Temple were upset with their religious brothers and the attitude toward the Ottoman Empire. Bringing in the Russian Jews and not expecting them to respect the local Arabs was just a disaster that did happen. Oy Vey, Oy Gotten Himmel what a bunch of bupchas were those menschen who immigrated from Europe prior to WW1.

This dvd was very informative. I had to watch it a few times in order to totally understand it. I was a bit disappointed at the end of it because it very casually,in the last couple of sentences, mentions that the first world war created the trouble that the Palestinians live with now. So my curiosity had me doing research to find out what WW1 had to do with this trouble. I felt as tho the film didnt finish the story. A few more paragraphs would have made it a much better film for me.
