When Grand Coulee Dam was being built during the depths of the Great Depression, everything about it - generators, powerhouses, pumps - was the biggest in the world. Grand Coulee was more than a dam; it was a proclamation: America could still do great things. The mile-long behemoth was the largest hydroelectric power-producing facility in the world when it was completed in March 1941 - just in time to power the nation's defense plants and the atomic reactors for the Manhattan Project. After the war, a vast irrigation project made possible by the dam helped transform the barren deserts of central Washington into rich farmland.

But despite its tremendous achievements - including the plentiful production of clean energy - the negative consequences of its construction are equally noteworthy. In a single stroke, Grand Coulee prevented access to one of the greatest salmon rivers in the world, threatening huge populations of fish with extinction, depriving the local Native people of their most important economic and spiritual resource, and instigating a profound cultural decline as waters behind the dam inundated towns, sacred spaces, and burial grounds.

Featuring the men and women who lived and worked at Grand Coulee and the Native people whose lives were changed, alongside historians and engineers, this AMERICAN EXPERIENCE film explores how the crucial tension between technological achievement and environmental impact hangs over the project's legacy.

Beautiful photography in counterpoint to comments by observers and historians. A treasure for all who have visited the dam (or would like to ).

As a PBS subscriber sustainer this member will buy at least five more of Grand Coulee Dam DVD. It is outstanding and features visuals of scenes of the Pacific Northwest I have not seen before plus (new to me) information not known before about the overall project. Am life-long resident of the inland northwest area that this production covers so very well. This video content is thorough, impressive, and comprehensive in every detail. Rewarding viewing and listening!

A well told story. Professionally scripted to put you in the time and place of the event before, during and since the construction.

Beautifully Done
Review by Dee on 07/17/20 review stating Beautifully Done
The program weaves together the many strands that came together to enable the dam to be built. In particular, it reveals the vagaries of history especially World War II and Hanford. Just when the dam was being judged a waste of money, the dam produced the energy that powered war production. There were some spectacular losers--the Colville Tribe and salmon. This documentary can be viewed again and again.

Nice to see the Native Ameicans
Review by J C. on 07/17/20 review stating Nice to see the Native Ameicans
It was nice to see the Native American side of the dam story told. It was sad the US goverment decided time was of the essence and chose to cover up so many Native graves w/out moving them.

I had to see for myself
Review by Readie K. on 07/17/20 review stating I had to see for myself
I saw this film on American Experience, so I had to go see the dam last month. My husband and I were given a ride to the interior of the dam, led by a very knowledgeable dam docent. The first thing we did upon returning home was to buy the DVD. I love big, powerful things, particularly rampant nature as tamed by man. Roosevelts responses to the devastation of the Great Depression were breathtakingly bold and effective. In the short run, the Colville Indian loss of land and way of life, and the disruption of salmon habit, were the price that was paid. In the long run, Grand Coulee Dam and the other Roosevelt initiatives were brilliant and achieved the bigger goal of saving the nation.

This product is well worth purchasing.

I watched this production on PBS this week and thoroughly enjoyed it because it is the story about my birthplace. I saw footage of the river and terrain before the project had begun - footage I had never seen before. I saw and learned about the construction of this enormous project and its positive as well as negative outcomes. It will be a production I show my children and grandchildren so that they know something about their mother, grandparents and great-grandparents history. These are a few of the reasons why I ordered this particular PBS American Experience DVD.

A Washington State Wonder
Review by Bill R. on 07/17/20 review stating A Washington State Wonder
When I saw that The American Experience was going to feature the Dam in its lineup, I knew that I was going to have to watch the film. After doing so I can honestly say that the Grand Coulee Dam truly is the biggest thing that man has ever done (recognize the phrase?) at least here in Washington. Being from Spokane, I took many trips to the Dam when I was a youngster. My relations back east could not believe this beautiful thing and when the third powerhouse came on line it became even more of a treasure. I will say that without the Dam, our state would be much poorer in all areas, but especially agriculture and power production. So kudos to the men who had the vision to build it and more important-kudos to those who made this great film that rivals Hoover Dam in every way! And now I will have them both!

American Experience Grand Coulee Dam

Having done the flying, for the aerial sequences for this production, it really brought the dam and the river to life. All these years of flying in Eastern Washington, it was a thrill to have PBS tell the story of Grand Coulee Dam.

It objectively captures the grandeur of the subject without neglecting to shed light on the dams consequences. From beginning to end, the DVD is as entertaining as it is educational. Thank you!
