Exceptional video
Review by Karen on 05/18/22 review stating Exceptional video
The video was very well made with interesting interviews with people who rode the rail and why. I loved the old footage from the 30's of so many Young men and some girls who left home to ride the rails.

I cannt imagine how calloused the politicians were until FDR started his New Deal to relieve the strain. Are we headed there again?

I get teary eyed every time I watch it.

Interviews with adults who as teenagers rode the rails in search of work and escape from Depression era doldrums. Most teenagers today do not appreciate the hardships their grandparents and great grandparents went through during the 1930s. Some of the folks interviewed saw their experience riding the rails as a great adventure, but most were in very desperate straits. 21st century teens whose most pressing concern is how to afford the latest electronic gizmo or Vera Bradley bag could use the dose of reality this film provides.

memories of my father
Review by Billy C. on 11/12/20 review stating memories of my father
My father rode the rails searching for work. He told me great stories about people he met while doing so. One story about a man who saved his life because of my fathers inexperience on riding the rails. He sang me songs when I was young. Songs by Jimmie Rodgers about hobos he heard while staying in jungles

Excellent film for students
Review by Okieprofessor on 11/08/20 review stating Excellent film for students
I use this in my history survey courses as an added interesting side bar to the Great Depression. In discussing with students how the depression effected everyone- this adds to the discussion. Students are interested in learning how the youth of America fared and the interviews are wonderful. Generally my students are fascinated by this film.

I pair this with a novel to teach students about the Depression both in literature and history.

Review by Old J. on 10/08/20 review stating American Experience: Riding the Rails
I ordersd this because my father was one of these young people who rode the rails. When he would tell me of his adventures and his friends who went with him, he never told me why they did this. I just assumed that they did it for a lark.

Phoebe Eaton, A Girl On The Rails

I actually missed the program but recently read my cousins book Chronicles of a Western Family in which she describes her adventure on the rails from Wyoming to Seattle in the 30s as well as the rest of her amazing life story. She is now 87 and I plan to order the DVD of The American Experience:Riding The Rails, The Great Depression Story of Youth in America because she is the only female featured in the documentary.

every generation including the older people like myself (born 1943) should view this to put their own childhood in perspective.

Riding the Rails
Review by Woody on 07/17/20 review stating Riding the Rails
Seems to me another PBS program highlighted the end of wandering teenagers as the initiation of the CCC and other NRA programs. This film didnt make the link. But it is an entertaining portrait of some pretty independent, sometimes beligerant punks who rode for fun, adventure, and eventual starvation. Interesting to see kids like my Dad must have been like during a time when their options were limited.
