The Duel

Must see! This reveals the persistent antagonistic relationship between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr which led to the death of the former and downfall of the latter. A whisper campaign between prideful political figures with opposing idealogies has a ring of contemporary familiarity. And Aaron Burrs words of remorse from his later life serve as lessons for us all -- that there is enough room in the world for diverse viewpoints. An excellent examination of two equally strong-willed and dynamic figures from Americas nascent years.

Famous Names in a Famous Story

BRIAN DENNEHY as the voice of Aaron Burr!! That alone should be enough to pique interest in this very informative and even-handed look at the relationship between Alexander Hamilton and Burr. LINDA HUNT narrates this hour-long film, and the actors are look-alikes of a sort. The action was somewhat limited: for Hamiltons West Indies childhood, all we see is a horseman trotting along a beach, gradually getting older and larger. But this definitely belongs in any American History buffs library.

Great video on misunderstood subject!
Review by K B. on 07/17/20 review stating Great video on misunderstood subject!
Considering the rather short running time of this piece it is very good. The producers, writers and various historians were sympathetic to both Burr and Hamilton in terms of their characters, motives and life experiences. It is also enlightening regarding the many controversies of the Revolutionary/Founding Era. We really do need to know more about Burr in particular because the bulk of his papers were lost while there are enormous amounts of information on Jefferson and Hamilton available. My only quibble is that a bit too much time was spent on the process of making dueling pistols which might have been spent on further fleshing out Hamilton Burr. Good job PBS!
