American Experience: The Great War The Great War tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as "doughboys." The series explores the experiences of African-American and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native American "code talkers" and others whose participation in the war to ""make the world safe for democracy"" has been largely forgotten. The Great War explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war; how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, transforming the United States into a dominant player on the international stage; and how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America's crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in U.S. history. It is a story of heroism and sacrifice that would ultimately claim 15 million lives and profoundly change the world forever.

This has got to be the very best DVD you could ever find on Americans involvement in the Great War or World War I. The whole story is very interesting, and you will learn a lot about the United States after you watch this. Dont miss it.

American Experience has created a wonderful piece on World War I and Americas role in it. Every American should view this program to see what a heavy price we paid for our role.

Relatively Unbiased
Review by Kris W. on 07/17/20 review stating Relatively Unbiased
Speaking as a non-history buff, I learned a great deal. And, apparently unlike some reviewers, I came away proud that my country was able to pull together and fight for an ideal.

Utterly fascinating.

Much more than just a recap of various battles over there, this series presented many insights into the United States home front before, during and after the war. Holds many important lessons that resonate today. Clearly, understanding the world of 1917 is hugely important here in 2017.

"...explores larger issues faced by America during the early part of the 20th century, including immigration. As a result, there's an unexpected timely feel to the proceedings, bolstered by eyewitness accounts performed by such voice actors as Blythe Danner and Campbell Scott." - Deseret News

"The Great War offers an enlightening, engrossing, and very timely history lesson. Highly recommended." - Video Librarian
