American Masters: American Ballet at 75

Ric Burns (New York) presents this rich, 75-year history of one of the world's preeminent ballet companies, from its earliest days as a small, financially struggling collective, to its pinnacle as one of the most respected and revered dance companies in the world. With unprecedented access to the company, witness dramatic live performances in Paris and Havana; grueling rehearsals at ABT's flagship studio in New York City; and slow-motion captures at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center in Tivoli, N.Y., with iconic dances by Misty Copeland, Gillian Murphy, Hee Seo, Marcelo Gomes, Isabella Boylston, Herman Cornejo, Daniil Simkin, Joseph Gorak, and Cory Stearns, who were chosen by artistic director Kevin McKenzie to illustrate the ABT dancers' formidable technicality, intricate artistry, and nuanced emotion.

This comprehensive inside look at the world of professional ballet includes archival photos and rare footage of ballet icons Jerome Robbins, George Balanchine, Agnes de Mille, Antony Tudor, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, as well as artists pivotal to the company's formation, including Alicia Alonso and the late Donald Saddler and Frederic Franklin; and contemporary luminaries, including dancers Susan Jaffe and Julie Kent, and choreographer Alexei Ratmansky.

This program builds a new appreciation for dance and an awe for those who literally give their bodies to create this beauty. The development of ABT has established America as a respected center for ballet and artistry. There is surely hope for all of mankind after seeing such dedication to becoming the best of human beings through the arts.

Excellent historically and artistically

I learned things about the history of ballet that Id never heard before. Anyone who loves dance will be fascinated by the details of how/where it all began, how it was maintained during hard times, and how/where it thrives. I couldnt get enough of the snippets of great dancers performing in great ballets. My only minor criticism is there were two few of these and the were too short. I wish the film had been a half hour longer with more ballet. The thing I liked best was that many of the dances were shown in slow motion - what a treat! What a revelation! To see perfection open up before your eyes at speed slow enough to appreciate every single point of artistic and athletic accomplishment is a treasure worth far, far more than cost of this CD.

All the grand daughters nieces want to be ballerinas so this is great and the boys love to move so it gives them permission in spite of a few backward fathers.

This is something Ill watch over and over again. Its fascinating to see the history of American Ballet Theater, and Julie Kents presentation is wonderful. Her love of the art form and of the people who have put their mark on ABT is a joy to see and hear.
