Tyrus is an award-winning documentary film about the inspiring life, art, and enduring impact of Chinese-American artist and Disney Legend, Tyrus Wong.

American Masters: Tyrus TYRUS tells the unlikely story of pioneering Guangzhou-born, American artist Tyrus Wong, who overcame a life of poverty and racism to become a celebrated painter (who once exhibited with Picasso and Matisse), Hollywood sketch artist, and "Disney Legend" for his groundbreaking work on the classic animated film Bambi. Previously unseen art and interviews with Wong, movie clips and archival footage illustrate how his unique style - melding Chinese calligraphic and landscape influences with contemporary Western art - is found in everything from Disney animation and live-action Hollywood studio films (Rebel Without a Cause, The Wild Bunch, April in Paris) to Hallmark Christmas cards, hand-painted California dinnerware, Depression-era WPA paintings, kites, and fine art. The film corrects a historical wrong by spotlighting this seminal, but heretofore under-credited figure who passed away in 2016 at the age of 106.

Bonus
Tyrus' visit to Angel Island (1:50)
Tyrus talking about some of his work (1:33)

I first got this DVD from producer Pam Tom when Tyrus just got out, and she was in Boston for the Asian Film Festival and screening. The story was so touching that I had to get a copy of the DVD. The following year, I show it at our community event, everyone loved it. And many popped have asked to show it again. Unfortunately the film was all in English. So many Chinese people who dont understand English would not be able to enjoy it. I told the audience that when the Chinese subtile becomes available, I will get another copy and show it again. Many said that they wouldnt mind to see it again. The documentary has not only captured the life of a great artist, his incredible contribution to the animation film industry, but it also revealed the time of history in America, discrimination toward Chinese immigrants and beyond. A very sad story, but it is also a beautiful story to see how an artist can be so versatile to create so many styles of artworks......

This bio on Tyrus is TRUE. He was honest about his feelings
Review by Tobey on 11/17/20 review stating This bio on Tyrus is TRUE. He was honest about his feelings
Tyrus exhibited enthusiasm for LIFE. Even when he was young, supposedly abandoned and disheartened, he was in survival mode that carried him creatively throughout his life. I knew him superficially but always felt that we had a bond regarding creativity. He was so lucky to have found Ruth; she was the assimilated one in the family who helped him all along the way. Tyrus was also very lucky in being in the right place at the right time...leading him to Bambi and his artistry. I want my sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren to know about Tyrus and his life.
