Chautauqua: An American Narrative is a one-hour documentary that looks at the contemporary aspects of Chautauqua, the utopian community that is in Chautauqua, New York. The program goes briefly into the history of Chautauqua, the national Chautauqua Movement of the early 19th century, and the historic and cultural importance that Chautauqua once held. But most of the program focuses on what goes on at Chautauqua today, including a tremendous artistic community, spiritual aspects, recreation and the daily dose of educational/intellectual lectures attend by thousands of people in a large semi-outdoor amphitheater. Voices heard in the program include David McCollough, Sandra Day O'Conner, E.J. Dionne, and many others.

Almost as good as being there!!!

Chautauqua is only 45 minutes from where I live but getting in the car and going isnt always an option. Now I can go there even in February by just popping in the DVD and watching this well-made program. Chautauqua is a place to disconnect from the everyday world. Its like a cruise without having to go to an east coast port and all the fuss and feathers of packing.

Had enjoyed the pbs presentation some time ago and purchased two dvds at that time.. Now located in Bayfield/Washburn, WI.. attending Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua, and bought these two more dvds to share with friends .in this world..

Nothing Like It - Anywhere!

Although this DVD outlines the basic story accompanied by lovely images and a well-written narrative, there is no way to capture what Chautauqua really is. Once you go, you are driven to return again and again and again. It is everything expressed in the other reviews, and MORE. My children are 5th generation Chautauquans, and our love for this magical place is deep in our soul. The peace, beauty, endless enrichment opportunities, but most of all, the people who go make this a unique and unforgettable experience.

Must go!!!

I had heard the name Chautauqua, but would not have been able to say what it signified. As I may soon be able to travel, I now know one place I must go every year. A vacation where not only the mind and body are feted but also the soul. Ballet, symphony, art, theater, opera, academia, cycling, scenery, the fellowship of like-minded people, what could be more idyllic or inspiring? The producers of the program did a wonderful job of presenting the essence of the experience of Chautauqua. That is a tough job, but they succeeded so well.

Heaven on earth!

Where else can you go and combine religion, symphony, ballet, theatre, politics, children programs, adult learning classes, and lectures on current and interesting topics? Chautauqua what else? No other place can begin to fill the shoes Chautauqua does. It is the perfect family meeting place. My husband has been going there for over 55 years. How thankful I am that he introduced me to it over 43 years ago. What a tranquil beautiful place it is for studying, relaxing, reading, and improving ones self. Give yourself that wonderful gift!!!!!

Accurate

I am from Chautauqua County and grew up 15 miles from Chautauqua Institution featured in the show. I have had a difficult time conveying to people, where I live now, what Chautauqua Institution is all about. Now I can give them a copy of the show and they can see for themselves. There is something for everyone at CI. Warning: You have to experience Chautauqua to really understand the feeling of it. I am happy to be moving back there!
