I believe ANYONE would benefit from watching this
Review by Me on 07/21/22 review stating I believe ANYONE would benefit from watching this
I watched this while I was inpatient. I have been dealing with my depression for over 15 years and I still learned something from this. This video was very educational and just so moving. I have watched it again and have asked my mother to watch it and my therapist to watch it. I wish I had the money to buy millions of copies to donate to hospitals and mental health facilities and therapists to help make a difference.

Hope for the hopeless
Review by Doc on 07/21/22 review stating Hope for the hopeless
Im sixtyone years old, and I was first diagnosed with clinical depression when I was still a teenager. Since that time, Ive been in and out of therapy and have been prescribed virtually all the common SSRIs on the market with to avail. The special Depression:Out of the Shadows has prompted me to contact another psychiatrist, and also a therapist to explore new avenues of medication and discuss possible ways that behavior modification might improve my condition, and prevent me from doing the unthinkable. I especially appreciated the emphasis on the fact that depression is a disease to be treated like any other disease, and that I may not be the worthless failure I perceive myself to be. Given my lengthy history of depression and the recent passing of my loving wife, Im not overly optimistic, but thanks to your special, Im giving it one last try.

I dont feel alone when I watch this....
Review by The A. on 07/21/22 review stating I dont feel alone when I watch this....
Ive had depression since I was a little girl, but with the recent death of the love of my life, my bad depression has plumpeted to extremely severe and paralyzing depression...dont judge me, but Im only 23. Depression knows no bounds and is just as horrifying and crippling for someone my age as it is for anyone older. I cannot even begin to express the total isolation, despair, and hopelessness that I feel every single day with absolutely no human contact for months on end. Thank you for this video, it was the first time that I didnt feel alone, it really does express wonderfully all aspects of depression and how we feel for those who do not understand this, or want to help loved ones going through it.

Great Understanding
Review by Sophie on 07/02/22 review stating Great Understanding
Viewed this DVD in hopes of understanding the illness of depression. Found this program very informative, educating, stirring, unsettling, and engaging. I learned so much and think this is a tremendously important and valuable production for all to view. It offered hope and insight to pathways for treatment and the possibilities they can bring. After watching this DVD I feel a much greater understanding of depression/BiPolar and felt optimistic for such diagnosis and treatment within my own family. I rented this DVD from the local library (plan to purchase for my own) in addition to Cry For Help.. I preferred Depression out of the shadows over the two as it covered real situations and introduced mental health providers and facilities as well as break through trials of treatment. Worth 5 stars.

Raw Materials
Review by Fobjob on 11/30/21 review stating Raw Materials
I used to hold my gun to my head every night, but the book The Way Up From Down by Priscilla Slagle, MD pulled me out. If you arent giving your brain the raw materials to build neurotransmitters, not much else is going to work well... Long walks, bike rides, and airplane rides helped, too. As long as it had lots of visual stimuli...

I started a depression group for adolescents and this video helps the teens understand depressions from different perspectives. Some of my kids didnt even realize they were depressed until they watched this video and identified with some of the characters.

Clinical yet a good for the lay person
Review by Di B. on 11/30/21 review stating Clinical yet a good for the lay person
Ive been a therapist for over ten years and have treated depression often. This video would make a good companion to the psychoeducation of the patient because it does a good job in normalizing the symptoms rather than pathologizing mental illness. One the other hand, there was one person in the video that was taking a curious combination of drugs that made it seem daunting and perhaps counter-productive to the lay person thus sending a mixed message about the effectiveness of treatment. I hope his health care professional saw that video too.

Great Information
Review by Mh T. on 11/30/21 review stating Great Information
I was so impressed by the valuable information presented in this program. It provides factual data that many do not know. Many Americans do not get treatment for this problem because of ignorance of this information. It is shown in a honest, straight forward way.

An informative documentary on depression, with a focus on de-stigmatizing this mental illness. I thought it was well-done.
