The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick

Ken Burns and Lynn Novick's ten-part, 18-hour documentary series, THE VIETNAM WAR, tells the epic story of one of the most consequential, divisive, and controversial events in American history as it has never before been told on film. Visceral and immersive, the series explores the human dimensions of the war through revelatory testimony of nearly 80 witnesses from all sides - Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as combatants and civilians from North and South Vietnam.

Ten years in the making, the series includes rarely seen, digitally re-mastered archival footage from sources around the globe, photographs taken by some of the most celebrated photojournalists of the 20th Century, historic television broadcasts, evocative home movies, and secret audio recordings from inside the Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon administrations. THE VIETNAM WAR features more than 100 iconic musical recordings from the greatest artists of the era, and haunting original music from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross as well as the Silk Road Ensemble featuring Yo-Yo Ma.

The package of the dvds was somewhat beat-up giving the appearance that it was used prior. Can you assure me that this set was indeed new and not used. I have not yet watched the dvds.

This was a monumental undertaking, even for Ken Burns and company. It was of course to discuss everything, but I feel that, as usual, Ken friends did a very capable well-balanced job. The unit I spent sixteen months of my two years in-country was not mentioned. It arrived in VN in May 1961 and left in March 1973, but due to the nature of our work (intelligence) was not mentioned because we were never there...I did not expect that it would be. As usual, Ken did a much better job than probably anyone else could have.

Very good series, just one big nit to pick
Review by Rcporter on 06/30/21 review stating Very good series, just one big nit to pick
Watched this during fundraising time on TV. Decided to buy it so that I would always have it. Every time I watch it I get ticked at LBJ, McNamara, Westmoreland, and Nixon et al. all over again. I was born in 64 so I dont remember any of it. My dad was on a carrier so he didnt have any information to offer either. So interested to see how this whole thing got started. It is not mentioned if congress ever approved a declaration of war, so was the whole thing unconstitutional to boot? Excellent production, story line, and matching soundtrack. The one nit pick is...when we watch this on PBS we are watching it for free. As such it has been pointed out that you have to put up with commercials, since they are paying the bills that allow you to watch it for free. However, when I buy the series I am paying the bill so I expect and demand that it be commercial free. At the beginning (and at the end!) of every disc we have to put up with the advertising of the trust funds etc. that have donated to PBS. Good for them, I dont want to see it - since I have now paid for the discs myself. But we have to see the same 1-minute intro and then the same 1:26 VIP list on every single disc. It is just as bad as almost any commercial disc that you buy where you have to watch ten minutes of previews before getting to the movie that youve paid for. We get too much advertising in our lives - it would be nice if these PBS discs would be one of the few respites that we get from that continuous onslaught. It may seem like a nit pick, but it is a very big deal to me. I will consider whether or not to buy any more PBS discs now since they have become just as bad as everybody else.

Review by MARLENE on 05/21/21 review stating The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novak
My review rating is based on the episodes of The Vietnam War I had watched on PBS, a couple of which I missed. I told some friends about how interesting the film was. They mentioned they would like to see it. After they helped me out I purchased The Vietnam War as a thank you gift. My friends and I are big fans of films by Ken Burns.

I would definitly buy this movie !
Review by Storman N. review stating I would definitly buy this movie !
I saw this documentary on PBS when it aired. I served in the Navy at Danang. Our squadron was a non-combatant photo recon squadron. Spent a total of 9 months there 3 different times. When I transferred back to the states in 1970 I was shocked at how our fellow citizens treated us with so mush disrespect. I could not understand why and after seeing this documentary it really opened my eyes on how corrupt our government really was! If you do not understand the Vietnam War I highly recommend you buy this documentary but be advised it is very graphic and violent!
