How far would you go to sustain the life of someone you love, or your own? When the moment comes, and you're confronted with the prospect of ""pulling the plug,"" do you know how you'll respond? Unfounded rumors of federal ""death panels"" grabbed headlines last summer, but the real decisions of how we die - the questions that most of us prefer to put off - are being made quietly behind closed doors, increasingly on the floors of America's intensive care units.

In this film, FRONTLINE gains access to the ICU of one of New York's biggest hospitals to examine the complicated reality of today's modern, medicalized death. Here, we find doctors and nurses struggling to guide families through the maze of end-of-life choices they now confront: whether to pull feeding and breathing tubes, when to perform expensive surgeries and therapies or to call for hospice. The film also offers an unusually intimate portrait of patients facing the prospect of dying in ways that they might never have wanted or imagined.

The DVD features Descriptive Video for the Visually Impaired

Thank you Frontline for producing such an accurate and sensitive documentation on end of life decisions. You captured the struggle so sensitively and accurately that the patient and families face. The doctors were transparent in allowing us to feel their struggle as they face treatment vs. comfort in regards to what is best for the patient. A must see as we all at sometime will face these crucial decisions. Well done, plan to use this in my orientation program with hospice employees.

Very important movie to watch
Review by A. H. on 07/17/20 review stating Very important movie to watch
This film shows, close up and personal, some of the difficult decisions facing those who are nearing the end of their life because of medical issues. These decisions are also shared with the patients family members. This movie was a bit intense but a good motivation for starting the conversation with your family about how much medical intervention you would want and writing out your advanced directives.

My wife and I who are in our late 70s watched this progam last night on PBS. I thought I need this for our 6 children to watch at a time when we are not facing the decision. We have both survived crisis situations that had good outcomes. At some point the decision must be made and its best to think ahead when one has a clear mind.

Realistic and touchingly beautiful!

As an oncology nurse working with end of life issues daily, I so often struggle to find the right answer to a patient or family questions about how long? I participate on my institutions Bioethics Board, and have wondered how members can be certain that what they offer as resolution in these cases is the right answer. Facing Death eloquently shows that there are no right answers. Only the actual moment in a persons illness will determine the next step. Advance directives and living wills offer so little in the way of guidance! I hope that this film becomes part of every residency curriculum. I thank every participant who made this valuable program possible.
