I wish I had this info when I started contributing to a 401k. If you are in anything but a very low fee SP 500 index fund you are being taken advantage of, unless, of course, your investment strategy is out performing the SP 500 year after year. If take into account the management fees etc., your chances of that are Slim and none, and shot Slim yesterday. Frontline has really served the American worker with this documentary. I immediately rolled over my 401k into an IRA Vanguard SP 500 index mutual fund. Great returns finally. Luckily my last job was one of the last to have a pension plan and they closed that door after I was just hired. I couldnt possibly live on my 401k savings alone. I probably could have if I had seen this documentary earlier in my life.

Think your pension is safe in a 401-K, OMG. This is about your time and is as scary as the Retirement Heist was about the 80s 90s pension losses.

If you think investment improves your bottomline this will reappraise your beliefs. Perhaps that mason jar buried under a special spot in the back yard is safer, unless you suffer dementia. The crooks on Wall St are still stealing even after Millekin only did 2 years.

A must-see

I saw the program on TV and purchased it for my adult children. Our high schools should include financial literacy among the graduation requirements, but since they do not, we must educate ourselves. The Retirement Gamble helps make us aware of certain pitfalls in traditional retirement planning and also points out some ways to improve ones chance of investing profitably for retirement.

Frontline shows you all the hidden ways (fees disguised and obscured) the retirement fund managers rob from your retirement fund. Bottom line: Actively managed funds are proven to NOT outperform the market. Your best bet is to buy indexed funds, like SP. Then you are riding the market without the managers taking as much as 60% of your returns in compounded fees over the life of your IRAs
