God in America, is a presentation of AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and FRONTLINE, and explores the historical role of religion in the public life of the United States. The six-hour series interweaves documentary footage, historical dramatization, and interviews with religious historians.

God in America examines the potent and complex interaction between religion and democracy, the origins of the American concept of religious liberty, and the controversial evolution of that ideal in the nation's courts and political arena. The series considers the role religious ideas andinstitutions have played in social reform movements from abolition to civil rights, examining the impact of religious faith on conflicts from the American Revolution to the Cold War, and how guarantees of religious freedom created a competitive American religious marketplace. It also explores the intersection of political struggle and spiritual experience in the lives of key American historical figures including Franciscan Friars and the Pueblo leader Po'pay, Puritan leader John Winthrop and dissident Anne Hutchinson, Catholic Bishop John Hughes, abolitionist FrederickDouglass, Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln, reform Rabbi Isaac Meyer Wise, Scopes trial combatants William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow, evangelist Billy Graham, civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Moral Majority's Jerry Falwell.

The American story cannot be fully understood without understanding the country's religious history,"" says series executive producer Michael Sullivan. ""By examining that history, God in America will offer viewers a fresh, revealing, and challenging portrait of the country.""

If only everyone in our country would watch this film, I think we would be a better nation for it. Understanding where we have come from can give us a better idea of where we are headed.

As an American-Canadian living in Canada I shall be presenting it to members of my Unitarian Congregation who enroll in a free Adult Religious Education program we will offer next winter. Some individuals are keen on comparing that history with the history of introduced religion in Canada.

Religious DNA of American Experience
Review by Clark O. on 07/17/20 review stating Religious DNA of American Experience
A revealing look at the the influence of religious ideas and experience in shaping American life and history. Presents broad, sweeping movements through representative persons and their contributions. While not a history of religion in American life,it is an incisive overview of the dynamic interactions among peoples, their environments and their religious sentiments and the way all these shaped key movements in American experience.

This is an amazing piece, to see how the Protestant Reformation was reenacted here in America. The Spirituality is more moving than the politics.

ARE BELIEF IN GOD IS IN OUR HISTORY
Review by Egw on 07/17/20 review stating ARE BELIEF IN GOD IS IN OUR HISTORY
THIS IS A VERY THOUGHTFUL AND COMPLETE HISTORY. FROM THE VERY BEGINNING TO THE PRESENT WE SEE OURSELVES AS A CHOSEN PEOPLE. AND THAT IS THE PROBLEM, BUT AT LEAST I NOW KNOW THE HISTORY OF WHY WE ARE THE WAY WE ARE IN DOMESTIC POLITICS AND FOREIGN AFFAIRS. IT IS TRAGIC, BUT IT IS WHAT IT IS. THERE IS HOPE, BUT IT IS A BATTLE OVER THOSE WHO JUSTIFY ALL BY QUOTING THE BIBLE.

Which God?
Review by Down D. on 07/17/20 review stating Which God?
Here is a history of the tendency of mankind to create a god in its own image....America being a melting pot of other social structures, this program discusses just how far away from the true nature of the Creator American religions have come, and how convoluted worship based on personal bias and lack of knowledge has brought this country to its ultimate demise. I wonder what the Creator would write in its own defense.

When I started watching this on TV I was so pleased to get an unbiased report of the history of religion in America. Knowing that I am not being told to believe one way or the other is so refreshing. I had to buy this for friends as well as for myself.
