Inveraray Castle - For more than 500 years, Inveraray Castle has housed the Clan Campbell, and is now home to the 13th Duke of Argyll, His Grace Torquhil Ian Campbell, and his young family.

Dumfries House - Boasting one of the largest collections of Chippendale furniture in the world, this once-neglected mansion was dramatically brought back to life by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Kincardine Castle - Home to only two people, the 70-room castle and its 3,000-acre estate was once merely a trifling extravagance to its wealthy owners, but now presents a passionate but ongoing struggle to keep it afloat.

Rosslyn Chapel - Rife with myth and legend, many believe the mysterious Chapel to be home to the Holy Grail or the skull of St. Matthew, John the Baptist, or even of Jesus Christ.

So much interesting info. Been to Scotland but didn't visit three of the estates. Did tour Roslyn Chapel and forgot much of what I learned. This is a great reminder. Love hearing about the history of each property and the families charged with their care.

Splendid Visit to Estates

The carvings in Rosslyn Chapel are truly incredible! The Dumfries House chandelier is awesome! The couples who live in Kincardine Castle and Inveraray Castle seem to be real people in this DVD.

Stunning Series

Just loved the 4 episodes. Wished there was more. I loved seeing the Duke and his wife working so hard to make the castle such a success and The Bradfords are a great credit to their community. Wonderful to see the work Prince Charles has done to the great home and Rosslyn Chapel is now on my Bucket list. I do hope that PBS will have more Great Estates ready soon.

An interesting combination of history and current events. Its not just about the buildings but people and the current status of the estates. It makes me want to visit them even more to see for myself!

Just ONE of the Beautiful Estates in Scotland

Personally I believe that Culzean Castle is of much more interest to visitors as it has had some very important world leaders stay there and it is ALSO IN BURNS COuntry which is also a Scottish National Landmark

A Pure Delight
Review by Bob P. on 07/17/20 review stating A Pure Delight
This series is a pure delight for the person who loves historic preservation, family history and architecture. I was captivated by the family stories of the owners and the dedication that they have in keeping this properties well-maintained and open to the public. Even in the 21st century these families are using these estates for the well-being of their greater communities, while still calling them home.

These are NOT the only great estates in Scotland
Review by Flyingscot on 07/17/20 review stating These are NOT the only great estates in Scotland
Having been brought up and educated in Ayrshire, Scotland and also a very proud Scot, we have estates just as nice as those shown here, and Culzean Estate and Castle in my opinion are every bit as nice as those shown here, so, maybe you could consider looking into making another D.V.D. to include it and others. I am now residing in Wisconsin, and it has nothing to compare with back home in any way.

It was breathtaking with the scenic views of the countrysides. The rooms in the castles were magnificent. Took me back to some of the places I had previously visited. All episodes were very informative.

Great Estates of Scotland Informative
Review by Kathie on 07/17/20 review stating Great Estates of Scotland Informative
I have only seen one segment of this great series, featuring the great estate of the Clan Campbell. It was beautifully photographed and very informative regarding the history of the family and their ancestral home, including a terrible fire in 1975 when all of the townsfolk rallied together to put out the fire and save the treasures inside the castle. Now restored, it is a great tourist attraction for young and old alike with a nice gift shop and tea room where the Duke will gladly sign a book about the history of the clan and their home, and quite a variety of events scheduled to attract people including an annual outdoor market filled with local items grown, created and for sale at an annual Best of the West event complete with live bands. They even discuss their concerns and wishes for the future of the region and disclose the fact that they do indeed have resident ghosts. By the end of the program I was ready and wishing I could leave for Scotland, where some of my mothers family hails from. I can hardly wait to see the rest of the DVD and am hoping that they will feature more great Scottish estates at some future time. Thank you again, PBS.
