Great Performances: Alfred Uhry's Driving Miss Daisy

Alfred Uhry's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Driving Miss Daisy comes to television with five-time Tony Award winner and three-time Academy Award® nominee Angela Lansbury and two-time Tony Award winner and Academy Award® winner James Earl Jones as Daisy Werthan and Hoke Colburn, respectively. Four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines reprises his Broadway role as Daisy's son Boolie Werthan.

Recorded in Australia at the Comedy Theatre in Melbourne, Uhry's classic play is a timeless, searing, funny, and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture's most enduring characters. When Daisy Werthan, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in midcentury Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man, to serve as her chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing, soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them. This iconic tale of pride, changing times, and the transformative power of friendship has become one of the most beloved American stories of the late twentieth century.

A sparse stage focused all of the attention on the 3 characters who were superb. I was sorry when the play ended.

Just to watch the close-ups of the faces of these fine actors who internalize the characters and how time and events affect them, is a Master Class in Acting.

An incredible play with incredible performers!!!! These old pros know their craft and still continue to share their talents with us! Thank you PBS for recording this stage performance so they may be with us forever!!! Ms. Lansbury and Mr. Jones are great, great actors, and Mr. Gaines not only holds his own, but interacts between both beautifully, creating a seamless continuity in the story line. Mr. Uhry has much to be proud of.

A vastly veracious vehicle
Review by Purrs P. on 07/17/20 review stating A vastly veracious vehicle
An honest look into culture and how good people are often misled by it. We are like sponges, soaking up what we see and hear. By the time we reach adulthood much has been accepted without questioning the truth of it. This shows us all the need to look at people as individuals, not as members of a class. It was very frank without being nasty, yet showed how nasty society can be. A wonderful study of personalities, excellently interpreted by the cast. They truly brought the characters to life. I laughed, cried, applauded, approved and disapproved of their actions, but above all, I learned. This will be watched many, many times. Once again, thank you PBS.

Masters Acting Class!

Ordered multiple copies because of theatre-loving friends. This Australian version is not to be missed. Camera angles are so close you can read the characters mind on the faces on two of the great living legends of English-speaking theatre. Lansbury is still a character and James Earl Jones understands the subtext. Fabulous performances...I am a semi pro director.

This special Broadway performance of Driving Miss Daisy is one not to be missed. It should be in your permanent DVD collection of great performances . It is something you will want to watch again and again . Theater tickets are so expensive in these times. When you watch this play you get all of the fun and excitement of watching a live production without leaving your home. It is nothing short of spectacular .

Sturdy vehicle showing signs of wear
Review by Jim C. on 07/17/20 review stating Sturdy vehicle showing signs of wear
Its a pleasure to see stage icons Angela Lansbury and James Earl Jones in the roles of Daisy and Hoke. The production itself is the problem, and Alfred Uhrys slender but affecting play wasnt well served the overstuffed Broadway production that originally starred Jones and Vanessa Redgrave. The slide projections, bits and pieces of a set and moving car pieces are distracting. A lot of the intimacy I recall from the stage production I saw with Julie Harris (wonderful!) and Brock Peters in the leads is absent. Jones is better at re-creating Hoke in his own image. Lansbury tends to fall back on familiar mannerisms in the role.
