Set up for failure

Usually PBS does an excellent job choosing participants. Centered around an incorrigible female who from the jump refused to follow a simple requirement. Follow and conduct yourself as a colonial. An incredibly interesting and expensive project destroyed by one female.

The Original Housewives!

Wow! I guess returning to the reality shows that started it all is worth it. I loved this! Watching Americans and Brits making it all work without is great entertainment. Got this and Frontier House for my Mother on Mothers Day, she says she will love me forever!

Educational reality series

I use this series to show Colonial times in my classroom. It is great for the students to see the hardships not only of colonists, but of 21st century individuals trying to live without the comforts weve come to know. I typically only show the first (getting to know the colonists and establishing the colony) and third episodes (establishing a theocracy and the breaking of rules), and each year my students beg to watch the rest; they are quite intrigued by the premise. It is rare to find a reality series actually worth anything. Thanks PBS.

Colonial House, 1940s, 1900 house and the pioneer era house are all exceptional - great series (I saw them all on air, but am buying the bundled DVD pack to watch again.... only suggestion, I wish they were available free online : )

Baby boomer to the core

It was interesting, but i got tired of the fact some couldnt drop their 20th Century beliefs. I dont care if in todays World you dont want to go to church, get over it----in this time frame you did if you knew what was good or going to be bad for you. You asked for a chance to step back in time and was given it---now play the game or go home

Good but fell short after Frontier House
Review by Jwscal on 07/17/20 review stating Good but fell short after Frontier House
Weve watched both this and Frontier House. Colonial House was entertaining but fell short on expectations compared to Frontier House. Colonial House seemed too structured and seemed to lack a sense of reality compared to Frontier House. I feel it would have been a better production if the participants had to provide for their survival as much as the Frontier families did.

I purchased this item b/c my family was interested in the time-travel experiences. This one was pretty interesting as it did help me(41) and my family (ages 12,15,18,43) understand a lot of the difficulties of this era. It was not what you would call, thrilling, but it did bring a lot of things to light. I am not a down-trodden woman and I do believe in womans rights, but some of the ladies on here, had a VERY hard time stepping into the past and filling the shoes they asked to be in. We enjoyed seeing the interaction and issues addressed with and for the American Indians of that day. We definitely got a sense of the elements and hardships that had to be endured on a daily basis. Overall, a very good DVD. (some parts not suitable for kids, as we had to have our 12 and 15 y.o. leave or turn heads)
