For the last half of the 20th century, America was consumed by two struggles: the civil rights movement and the cold war. For 30 years, Hubert Humphrey stood at the center of both. And while he never reached his dream of being president - and in fact is most remembered for his 1968 loss to Richard Nixon - Humphrey left behind a legacy few presidents can match. As a soldier of the New Deal and the Great Society, he amassed one of the most prolific legislative records in senate history, sponsoring hundreds of bills - from Medicare to the Peace Corps to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

But Humphrey's most enduring achievements were in the areas of civil and human rights. Propelled to party prominence during the 1948 Democratic National Convention, the 37-year-old mayor of Minneapolis delivered an historic speech directly challenging the racist leadership of the U.S. Senate. Almost two decades later, Humphrey's extensive network of church and civil rights leaders helped him to break the longest filibuster in senate history, resulting in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

In November of 1977, for the first time in U.S. history Congress held a special session to honor a single senator. In the words of journalist Bill Moyers, ""while we may not remember Hubert Humphrey's name, [his] fingerprints are all over the America of today.""

Hubert Humphrey - Who Should Never Be Fo
Review by Concerned C. on 07/17/20 review stating Hubert Humphrey - Who Should Never Be Fo
Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey was a major social thinker of the 20th century. Because of his innate modesty and the colossal egotism of his president, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Humphrey allowed himself to be sent to the sidelines. And when it was finally time for him to come into his rightful place in history, when he ran for the presidency in 1968, President Johnson so thoroughly sabotaged his chances, he lost the election. This film tells this story compellingly. It should be necessary viewing for all high school students in our country.

Excellent....Although it is not, this is done in the same quality as the American Experience documentaries. Vice President Humphrey is a man that younger generations should learn about. Proof that good/decent men and women can make a difference.

Memories of an earlier political era
Review by Chris on 07/17/20 review stating Memories of an earlier political era
I bought this DVD for my Media History class, and to share with my father. I grew up in the 1960s and early 1970s, and remember Hubert Humphrey as an energetic and compassionate reformer. My father, now 85, was a history teacher during that era and loved the DVD, too. In those days liberals and conservatives fought, but they also were able to reach compromise and get things done. Liberals like Humphrey had friends and was respected by people on both sides of the aisle. I met Humphrey once, in 1970. He was talkative and very friendly on that campaign bus ride in Northwest Ohio. Ill never forget how he was so interested in learning about other people on the bus that day. His era is one well worth remembering, and this DVD helps the current younger generation learn about a significant political figure in the third quarter of the 20th century.

Humphrey, a Man for all times
Review by Mary on 07/17/20 review stating Humphrey, a Man for all times
As a liberal, it was poignant to watch this documentary about the man who did so much to make this country better for everyone. He led us into a more inclusive country. Its too bad he got entangled with Johnson and the Vietnam War. Johnson was an impossible person to work for -- a bully who treated his subordinates, and his long suffering wife, like dirt. Thanks to the maker of this documentary for giving Humphrey his due.

I was young, busy raising a family, and not political when Hubert Humphrey came to national attention. Sadly, I was not aware of him except as a possible candidate for president. This wonderful DVD reveals what an unusual and truly wonderful gentleman he was.

The Truth About Hubert Humphrey!
Review by Neesy on 07/17/20 review stating The Truth About Hubert Humphrey!
Even for long-time Minnesota residents, this video is incredibly illuminating about the valuable work done by this astounding man. For example, it was his work that brought about the Civil Rights Act; the Peace Coorp was his idea. One can only hope that this video will rectify historys view of this true statesman.

I wasnt a big Humphrey fan, but this was fascinating. It does an excellent job of portraying the Civil Rights and VietNam era. My first purchase from PBS...it was that good.

Weve Learned Nothing From History
Review by Johnny K. on 07/17/20 review stating Weve Learned Nothing From History
A wonderfully edited piece of American History that every American citizen should watch. It is amazing how much history has not changed. Look at the deal that Nixon made with the South Vietnamese president to kill the Paris Peace Talks and turn the 1968 election. Then compare that to the Arms for Hostages deal that Reagan made with Iran, the year 2000 stolen election, or the expoloits of Dick Cheney. It is important to keep those memories fresh avoid similar acts of treason are not made at the expense of the American people. Unfortunately, it seems that we forget the transgressions of our leaders too quickly and easily.

Hubert Humphrey- 20th Century Leader
Review by Jay on 07/17/20 review stating Hubert Humphrey- 20th Century Leader
This is an excellent description of Hubert Humphreys life- private and public. It explores- warts and all- the history of the one of the 20th Centurys most dedicated, progressive and important public figures whose fingerprints are on most of the important pieces of legislation-internatinal and domestic- of the 20th Century.

Review by Jay on 07/17/20 review stating Excellent Warts and All Biography
This is an excellent two hour documentary- warts and all on the life of one of Americas outstanding, much unappreciated, public servants-whos fingerprints are on most of the progressive legislation of the 20th Century. Especially interesting is the extra end of DVD inclusion of an interview with Bill Moyers in 1976.

Fantastic lesson in American politics
Review by Roy R. on 07/17/20 review stating Fantastic lesson in American politics
I was 19 during the Chicago Democratic convention. I remember the events vividly. I am buying this DVD for my son to get a good insightful picture of the times. It is a bit depressing to see how many issues of those days still play out today: in 1948 when HHH enters the Senate, he is asked by a reporter what is he going to do to shrink the size of government. In 1964 he fights to defeat a Republican filibuster of the Civil Rights Act; in 2010, Senator John McCain leads a Republican filibuster to block a Defense bill that will give full rights to gays serving in the military...
