Disappointed

A wonderful production messed up by one bad decision

The global view from space of earths human affliction is brilliant. But whoever made the assumption that this production would be enhanced by the addition of really horrid and terribly noisy and intrusive musical accompaniment should be fired. I cannot watch this DVD without muting the sound and being forced to read captions for the narration. Apparently the producers dont understand the concept background music. Otherwise, I would give it 5 stars.

Humanity from Space is a must see DVD

As I watched how the history of humanity advanced for 12,000 years and how it was illustrated from space I was awestruck! I sat on the floor like a kid and did not close my eyes for the total 158 minutes. It is beautiful. The layering of each segment of human advancement was impeccable. By the time it ended I understood clearly how deeply interconnected we all are - in all ways - no matter who we think we are. Humanity is extrapolating itself and all of our ingenuity for better or worse.

Over rated

I gave up watching after an hour. This so called epic is disjointed and repetitive, relying far too much on footage of a revolving earth lit up by electricity, over and over again. The background music is too loud and intrusive. But worst of all, in that first hour I spotted three mistakes. The word barells was mis-spelled like this, the voiceover referred to ships ploughing the seas, not plying and Paris was referred to as as major port. A sloppy and shoddy production

Something for that special person

This is a wonderful history of the human race on earth, full of interesting insights over some 12000 years. If you know one of those intellectually bright persons who never had the opportunity for a university degree, this is an ideal Christmas present. The title is a little misleading, and has nothing to do with space travel. Might be renamed Humanity from a Distance. Im a scientist, and found this really held my attention.

A Unique View in Multiple Ways

In addition to the shots from space, the program Humanity from Space that I watched on TV provided new ways to think about our presence on Earth and how its affecting both our civilizations and our planet. It contains some suppositions about our future here that I hadnt thought of before. As soon as the program broadcast was done, I called and ordered three DVDs: one for myself and one each for my two daughters who are now on their own. Its something to watch repeatedly and to consider throughout our lives.

Informatively show however had a couple incorrect facts.

1. The Trans Atlantic wire started in Newfoundland and not in the USA. 2. The Bay of Fundy is in New Brunswick NOT in Nova Scotia.

Space for Humanity?

The major lesson my husband and I learned is the need for population control. As the documentary said, so far humans have been able to develop the technology to contend with population increase, but with the population exploding as they say, we are soon going to run out of space and the basic necessities for life--to say nothing of the civil unrest these huge numbers are going to cause. Great film except for the overly loud background music as mentioned by another reviewer, but that is true of a lot of current documentaries and news shows.

Great documentary with solid real life examples

I enjoyed this 2 hour documentary about how humanity has changed over the past 10,000 years and how the change has been especially accelerated since the invention of the Printing Press by Gutenberg and then the Industrial Revolution. I definitely wont take the Internet for granted anymore. I learned a lot from this educational documentary. Thanks!

Inspiration for the future

After watching this production on PBS I knew that I not only had to add it to my personal library but also share it with friends. This production educated me how technology is being used to meet the challenges of today and globally. I found it inspiring to the point that I am now looking and seeing the potential of a bright future for all humanity. I am purchasing copies for Xmas gifts!

History and geography from Space. It doesnt get any better than this for folks of all ages.I have watched the dvd close to twenty times and at age 73 I will watch it more and more. I simply love it s history and geography ae my collegiate studies of yesteryear. Thank you PBS!

HUMANITY FROM SPACE

With all the silly, political stuff going on now, this program caused me to re-focus my thinking, and caused me to wake up several times that night while sleeping. The production is extremely well done, and contains so much to think about, and do something about instead of wasting time on the current politcal news cycle. AABotto
