A one-hour documentary on the Mexican American civil rights movement. The film tells the story of one key injustice - the refusal, by a small-town funeral home in Texas after World War II, to care for a dead soldier's body ""because the whites wouldn't like it"" - and shows how the Incident sparked outrage nationwide. Two stubborn and savvy leaders, newly-elected Senator Lyndon Johnson and activist Dr. Hector Garcia, formed an alliance over the incident. Their relationship would help elect John Kennedy to the White House and lead, ultimately, to Johnson's signature on the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Boy was I surprised when I saw this. My father was involved with the GI forum at the time and made us aware of the indecent and had great respect and admiration for LBJ. I sincerely wish all Hispanics could view this especially the young.

Born and raised from a small Texas town myself, I was able to better understand and depict these old tensions within a small community that are related to discrimination, but yet capture what political leaders are capable of achieving through experienced leadership. I, personally had a wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. John Valadez, the producer and director of this documentary, at my current college at Texas AM University in Kingsville, Texas, last fall and I was inspired by his works. I encourage anyone who is interested or learning about Civil Rights to view this film. Thank you PBS for great customer service, I [...] was completely pleased.
