Ken Burns: The Address

At the tiny Greenwood School in the small New England town of Putney, Vermont, its roughly 50 students, boys from the ages of 11 to 17, are asked each year to memorize the Gettysburg Address. This would be a daunting assignment for any student, but the boys at Greenwood all suffer from learning differences that have made their personal, academic and social progress extremely challenging.

Embedding camera crews at the school for three months to chronicle the boys' struggle to learn Abraham Lincoln's immortal words and deliver them in a final public recitation, acclaimed filmmaker Ken Burns has created a fascinating and inspiring documentary that shows them heroically confronting past failures and humiliations, ultimately opening the door to what Lincoln himself called "a new birth of freedom."

Interweaving the history of this most famous of American speeches with the contemporary journey of the boys at Greenwood, The Address reveals the timeless resonance of Lincoln's words, while culminating in the triumph of the human spirit.

This is a small gem
Review by Yvonne on 01/09/22 review stating This is a small gem
This is a small gem within the Ken Burns collection. I came upon it while searching what to watch next on WETA PBS which I recently joined. I just loved it, and bought a copy for my children, who are teachers and care givers. I hope you will show it (again?) on TV, as then many more people will watch it!

I found this Ken Burns production to be of the highest quality and about a very crucial educational principle. I gave one copy to my grandkids and one to my local school. Grandkids really liked it, I have yet to hear from the school except for the kind expression of thanks from the principal.

This is a unique film focusing on the Gettysburg Address and students with challenges learning to memorize Lincolns speech. It is inspiring. You felt like you get to know the boys and you very much want them to succeed. I highly recommend it.

What a great example of valuing every student and giving them the opportunity to value themselves. An outstanding project for greater understanding of basic American values and how we attained what we have as a nation.

I got this DVD for my boss birthday which is in December. Im sure shell like it. I had no idea that this school existed which makes this program all the more fascinating. The first school I went to was similar to this but this school is very different from mine. And leave it to the great Ken Burns to produce another great piece of work, which this is!. Very inspiring program!.

Educational and heartwarming
Review by Grandmother on 07/17/20 review stating Educational and heartwarming
As a grandparent of a child with Dyslexia and Dysgraphia, I found this story inspiring. Also revealing...although we read much about both learning difficulties, it is much more powerful to watch this story and to experience with the students their struggles and successes. I only wish I could order the DVD but it is unavailable to us in Canada.

Really Eye Opening
Review by Michael on 07/17/20 review stating Really Eye Opening
Being a Lincoln fan, I thought I was buying a new DVD about the Gettysburg Address. I did get more than I bargained for! The school and their teaching methods are wonderful and it is too bad that other schools do not teach history the way this school does. This DVD bridged the age generation of 150 years and it shows that every child can learn. The fact they use the Gettysburg Address makes it even more imoressive. This video made me proud of the past history of this country and it made me so proud for the young men and theri families that others thought were nit normal GREAT DVD!!!!
