Ken Burns The Civil War - USA 1881-1885.
Review by Sue C. on 07/29/22 review stating Ken Burns The Civil War - USA 1881-1885.
We are enjoying this history of the Civil War as it has many notations about the reasons this happened as well as the many struggles Pres. Lincoln had during this period of time. There were many battles that were just slaughters of men on both sides of the war, needless death, but were handled very expertly and I didnt find this disturbing visually only in the sense of the loss of life. A great deal of thought and planning went into this production and it helped me to better understand our nation as a whole. I would recommend this to anyone who is a history buff or to those who wish to know more about the struggles this country endured as it grew into the country it has become. One has a better understanding of where we are today in looking back to this period of Americas history. So glad we purchased this Ken Burns The Civil War. Thanks PBS

Watched so much we had to replace the DVDs.

Ken Burns is amazing and this program about the Civil War doesnt disappoint. This DVD set was actually replacing another set of DVDs for our public library. Several of the DVDs wore out from so much play. Highly recommend this program and actually anything else by Ken Burns.

Masterful presentation of the Civil War.
Review by Cathy on 04/27/22 review stating Masterful presentation of the Civil War.
Masterful presentation of the Civil War. He created a clear and heart rendering picture of soldier's lives and their daily struggles. Letters from soldiers to loved ones will pull at your heartstrings. Descriptions of the battles and casualties will make you shake your head in disbelief as Burns introduces a documentary style that continues to be copied today.

My family really enjoyed watching Ken Burns The Civil War. I learned so much more about our history during that period than what was taught in school. I want my grandchildren to view it. It would help them get a better understanding of the causes leading up to this war.

Civil War was remastered. Reconstruction was essential info on current U.S. thought. Scots Worsley clarify Bonney Prince Charley other topics. Public Library sold or found damaged many Austen-Dickens DVDs, which I now have. My VHS of Civil War is BW - now improved.

Overexposed and washed out video
Review by Vilya on 12/19/20 review stating Overexposed and washed out video
I just finished watching the first two discs of The Civil War and I feel compelled to pen my amateur opinion. While I do not have the best hardware, nor any longer the sharpest eye, and my technical expertise is more a personal fantasy than an established fact, I have to say that I am sorely disappointed with what I saw. Watching these first two discs was as if someone had turned the brightness on my television to its maximum. There were no blacks to be seen, not even in the vertical bars aside the viewing area. When the credits were rolling, it was hard to see where the image ended and the black bars began. Dark greys were the closest thing to black to be found. The whites were so bright as to obscure fine detail. It made me want to squint my eyes. The colors seemed bleached like laundry left to dry several times too often under a desert sun. I thought I was looking at a faded Polaroid print. It is an overexposed slide show that made me wish I could apply Adobe photoshop to it. At times the grain is so thick during the color scenery segments that you would think it was filmed in the middle of a swarm of gnats. These discs should be recalled, incinerated, and replaced. I would really rather watch my dvd edition than this unnatural abomination. I have no idea how the blu-ray.com reviewer gave the video a 4 out of 5. I do not know what Ken Burns saw, if or when he approved of this travesty, but it could not have been what I just sat through. I also found that the constant reminder of Bank Of Americas sponsorship grew tiresome fast. These mini commercials precede and follow every single episode.

no more boring history lessons
Review by Chris on 11/21/20 review stating no more boring history lessons
This is the 2nd Ken Burns documentary that Ive had the pleasure to watch. The series is engaging in a way that history class never was. My fathers ideal family vacation was visiting battle sites (Gettysburg, PA) but this documentary gave provided a more comprehensive picture than just one battle. A fantastic drama even for someone who doesnt typically watch war or military type shows.

History.. that quite simply made History
Review by James S. on 11/21/20 review stating History.. that quite simply made History
Like Homer, Anne Shelly, Edgar Allen Poe, and J.K. Rowling. Ken Burns is both an master storyteller and Sage. He has quite literally invented a style of documentary that teaches a important piece of history to everyone.. especially schoolchildren. (once you start watching.. you cant stop) I feel that viewing of the entire series should be manditory for all junior/senior high history students when they cover the Civil War. I remember learning Far more from Ken Burns Docuentaries than I ever did from the Remembering Dates, Places, People style of teaching done at my school. Whenever the series is played on PBS.. I make sure my children watch.

"If better use has ever been made of television, I have not seen it and do not expect to see better until Ken Burns turns his prodigious talents to his next project." - George Will, Syndicated Columnist
