I watched this with fascination as I related to the questions that surround the writing of the Gospels of the NT.

I am happy to finally see the real history of Mr. Lincoln and the uncivil war and not the whitewashed versions told to our children in school. I had found the program very interesting and informative from a black mans view. Thanks for this honest program. From a student of the war between the states.

Early career and personal history
Review by Crockette on 12/21/20 review stating Early career and personal history
I never really knew about Lincolns early career as a lawyer with a partner, who shed alot of light on Lincolns basic attributes, and the emotional struggles he faced, which apparently helped him during the Civil War years later. It showed more of a regular person, very talented and very tough...instead of the idea that he is quite an extraordinary figure, incapable of understanding and living the common life. Excellent production!

Looking for Lincoln
Review by Bob B. on 12/15/20 review stating Looking for Lincoln
Dont bother looking for Lincoln here, you wont find him. This program might have been produced by the RNC, there is a large segment devoted to former President George W. Bush --- in which W attempts to compare his trials and tribulation in Iraq with those of ole Abe. A huge disappointment on this, the 200th anniversary of Lincolns birth!

Great search for Lincoln
Review by Mara on 07/17/20 review stating Great search for Lincoln
Saw this on TV--beautifully done. Based on first hand accounts and current research. Tries to undo a century of myths that have built up around Lincoln and show the real man in the context of his times. Tries to be very balanced, but everyone will have their own prejudices touched in viewing different opinions. Includes both Pres Clinton and Pres Bush, (only a few minutes from each) remarking on the influences they felt from Lincoln in their service as President. Should be used in classrooms.

Up to date respectful of its audience
Review by Longtime R. on 07/17/20 review stating Up to date respectful of its audience
This program is excellently informed and balanced. I dont think it could have been done much better in this format and at this length. Gates handles matters very well, though his feigned innocence on Lincoln isnt very believable from one of the best-informed scholars we have. He makes good use of the Lincoln experts who are included, though one might suggest others who would have been as good or better. Its good in particular to have Harold Holzer involved. All in all, this program gives you in digestible form something like the state of the art in serious thinking about Lincoln today.

Great exploration of the myth of Lincoln
Review by Qbtacoma on 07/17/20 review stating Great exploration of the myth of Lincoln
This documentary, though aimed at high school students and other people with a basic knowledge about Lincolns history and significance, has something to offer for everyone. The main question driving Gates are not Who was Lincoln? but rather Was Lincoln really who we think he was? The documentary sympathetically but critically examines why people have chosen to remember Lincoln in the way they have - for example, as a shining beacon of racial equality - when the truth is more complicated. However, it does not judge or condescend to people looking for heroes in American history. It just gently reminds us that reality may disappoint sometimes. Some of the best moments include historians sitting around a dinner table arguing (respectfully) about Lincoln at length (no sound bites here) and visiting with modern day Lincoln impersonators.

"…ambitious and captivating …" - Glenn Garvin , THE MIAMI HERALD

"Opinionated, argumentative but grounded in research, Gates' personality and filmmaking style continues to entice nonscholars to a deeper understanding of history - and, not least, to give us a better appreciation for historical scholarship." - Joanne Ostrow, THE DENVER POST
