Blu-Ray Edition is LONG Overdue
Review by LongIslandmire on 08/18/22 review stating Blu-Ray Edition is LONG Overdue
My biggest love for this-and all three PBS produced movies of the Tony Hillerman stories-are the stunning NM landscapes. They are so gorgeous they make me bust out crying because i had longed to retire there. But human-induced climate change wildfires which will only get bigger and more frequent killed that dream. And even though most of NM is also plagued by dangerous sinkholes, especially happening in the more developed areas (Rio Rancho, Las Cruces), NM is truly the Land of Enchantment. Of all three Hilerman movies this is probably my favorite but they are all excellent; perfect casting as always, though I wish Peter Fondas character would have been more developed. I realize that PBS needs to watch its budget but I hope they plan to issue the Blu-ray version of all three movie set, including DTS MA lossless sound. Please make it happen soon!

The Leaphorn and Chee miniseries is a delight to mystery lovers and those in need of a different perspective on human existence. I highly recommend the entire, three dvd set.

Others better. After devouring the books, the movie version was a let down. Though better than the stuff on Television. Not up to the PBS versions however.

I would buy this product again and again

Author Tony Hillerman is a master storyteller in his creation of Navaho tribal policeman Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee in A Thief of Time. An archaelogy dig is the catalyst for doubt, , conflict, greed and murder in New Mexico. In their personal lives both Chee and Leaphorn battle their own doubts. Chee is conflicted as his role as a Medicine Man and as a tribal policeman. Leaphorn has his own doubts about Chees belief about dealing with murders. This is one of Hillermans best stories. I really hope that further novels of Tony Hillerman are again presented on PBS. Sadly, Tony Hillerman is gone, but his stories will live on and on. I hope that Robert Redford will be willing to be the catalyst for more Hillerman novels brought to life. The actors in The Thief of Time, Coyote Waits and Skinwalkers are at the top of their game. The scenery is spectacular, and the pace of the stories are magical. I watch all of the DVDs again and again. Thank you, Donna L.Wolfe

The actors, landscapes and plot style are just as I pictured them in the books. I would love to see more of this series.

Movie Did Not Deliver
Review by Gopher G. on 07/17/20 review stating Movie Did Not Deliver
I read all of Tony Hillermans novels and enjoyed them immensely. I was, however, very disappointed in all three PBS movies. While the acting was, in my opinion, superb, the stories just seemed lifeless; and I absolutely hate cursing with the Lords name, which occurred in these movies. BIG Kudos to Wes Studi who played Leaphorn, and Adam Beach who played Chee; their presence made the movies worth my while to watch.

Missing: All thats important to a Tony Hillerman novel

How does a film come to lack the air of mystery that landscape and cultural visage have given to a novel? Do the earlier ones do better?

Really Great and Enjoyable Show !
Review by Cactus B. on 07/17/20 review stating Really Great and Enjoyable Show !
Reasonably faithful to Hillermans book, being Hillerman advised and approved, with very good acting and, along with the companion Coyote Waits, very much worth watching. I highly recommend these two DVDs to anyone who enjoyed the books - - you wont be disappointed. I was hesitant, as the DVDs often arent as good as the books, but these are.

Tony Hillman fans,must have.
Review by Bob on 07/17/20 review stating Tony Hillman fans, must have.
Fans of the Hillman books/stories will need these since we have no new stories now(except hopefully his daughter). And unfortunately we probably wont have any more of these movies, certainly not containing these actors. What a loss.

This was the very first book I read by Tony Hillerman and from then on I was hooked. This story is one of the best and acted well. So glad that Robert Redford took up the torch to make these movies and wish he would make more - there are so many wonderful tales left to see :)

Tony Hillerman and PBS at their best!
Review by Squeaky T. on 07/17/20 review stating Tony Hillerman and PBS at their best!
Tony Hillerman makes New Mexico come alive and this film accentuates the beauty of the state. And put a great plot in the mix, and you have a great movie. This one of the three has a wonderful commentary well worth the re-watch of the movie. They point out recurring images and add information about the Indian culture. If you enjoy a good mystery, you will enjoy this movie!
