Inspector Robert Lewis (Kevin Whately) and his partner, the enigmatic Detective Sergeant James Hathaway (Laurence Fox), return to the idyllic Oxford countryside and Colleges in five new thrillers, forcing the pair to revisit the past - and to reconsider the future. Unedited, U.K. broadcast edition.

This series is the broadcast version.

Episodes include:

Counter Culture Blues - Lewis is starstruck when he's sent out on a disturbing the peace call, only to come face to face with The Addiction, a rock and roll band from the '70s on its way to a comeback - thanks to the lead singer's (Joanna Lumley, Absolutely Fabulous) timely return from the dead.

The Dead of Winter - After wrapping up a gruesome case that leaves him shaken, Hathaway finds himself investigating a murder at Crevecoeur Estate, where he spent much of his childhood. Do his old playmates - including his first love - know more than they're letting on? And was the accidental shooting of Crevecoeur's Philip Coleman (Nathaniel Parker, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries) really an accident, or was it meant to be a distraction?

Dark Matter - Andrew Crompton, Master of Gresham College and amateur astronomer, is found dead only days before Dr. Ella Ransome, Crompton's wife's best friend, is also murdered. Are the two crimes connected? Facing a list of suspects that includes everyone from Sir Arnold Raeburn (Robert Hardy, Harry Potter) right down to the head porter, Lewis uncovers infidelity, blackmail, and madness.

Your Sudden Death Question - Lewis and Hathaway find themselves up against a slick quizmaster (Alan Davies, Jonathan Creek) when the standout competitor at a private quiz weekend is killed before the competition even begins. But is competition the motive, or is it just a convenient cover to settle old scores?

Falling Darkness - Dr. Hobson finds herself caught up in a decades-old vendetta when one of her university friends is murdered, and another young student is killed in the house Hobson and her friends shared years ago. Obviously unable to act as the pathologist in the case, Hobson instead finds herself and her remaining friends - Dr. Ellen Jacoby and playboy Alec Giles (Rupert Graves, Sherlock) - suspects, and Lewis is forced to subject her to questioning.

A great series of solveting mysteries, set in Oxford England. With beauitful scenery, the series has very high standards, which shows high morals and loyalty. The two lead actors are nicely cast together, the young, and the old, so to speak These DVD are a English series at its best with great stories. One can sit back, and really relax

Being a huge Morse fan, I was thrilled when PBS aired the Inspector Lewis series. I have bought all the series to date and intend to buy more (for myself and as gifts) as they become available. I have recommended this series to many friends and family members, all of whom loved it as well. I hope the Inspector Lewis series runs for many more seasons.

Even Better Than Morse
Review by Annie on 07/17/20 review stating Even Better Than Morse
I was so pleased when the Inspector Lewis episode aired. I had no idea it was going to be a series. It has become the best mystery series on Masterpiece Mystery. The casting is perfect. All of the actors are so perfect in their roles and totally believable. DS Hathaway becomes more intriguing every episode. The character has such a great backstory to build on. It will be interesting to see how it plays out. I do hope the series runs as long as Morse did.

Love Inspector Lewis and Hathaway
Review by Grove F. on 07/17/20 review stating Love Inspector Lewis and Hathaway
We find the characters in the series interesting because of their flaws and histories. Lewis is curmudgeonly and sometimes seems plodding in his work to solve the mystery, but always gets there. Hathaway, very different than Lewis, makes the perfect team. Love these stories.

If only U.S. producers would take the time to develop well written, sensitive, and intellictually challenging drama such as the Inspector Lewis (and for that matter, the Inspector Morse)series, we would all be so much more highly appreciative and entertained in the USA. Please bring Inspector Lewis, Series 4 and Series 5 to the USA!!

Gotta love a good mystery!
Review by Diane on 07/17/20 review stating Gotta love a good mystery!
Ive been a fan of Masterpiece Mystery for years and I think the Inspector Lewis series is one of the best!

"The Oxford-based series is beautifully filmed, and the music, composed by Barrington Pheloung, adds effectively to the mood and tone of the series." - Suite101 Blog.

"I just have to say that The Inspector Lewis Series on Masterpiece Mystery is some of the best television there is. Too bad it's on PBS and, therefore, has a relatively small following compared to, say, The Mentalist or Law and Order SUV... better writing, superior characters, lovely photography, considerably more depth, but the question is why can't American mystery dramas be more like the Inspector Lewis Masterpiece Mysteries on PBS? ... I wonder what would happen if Inspector Lewis and Sergeant Hathaway showed up on ABC?" - Stormy Malone's Column Blog.
