Particle Fever: Video Librarian's Best Documentary of 2015

Imagine being able to watch as Edison turned on the first light bulb, or as Franklin received his first jolt of electricity. For the first time, a film gives audiences a front row seat to a significant and inspiring scientific breakthrough as it happens.

Particle Feverr follows six brilliant scientists during the launch of the Large Hadron Collider, marking the start-up of the biggest and most expensive experiment in the history of the planet, pushing the edge of human innovation. As they seek to unravel the mysteries of the universe, 10,000 scientists from over 100 countries join forces in pursuit of a single goal: to recreate conditions that existed just moments after the Big Bang and find the Higgs boson, potentially explaining the origin of all matter.

But our heroes confront an even bigger challenge: have we reached our limit in understanding why we exist? Directed by Mark Levinson, a physicist turned filmmaker, from the inspiration and initiative of producer David Kaplan and masterfully edited by Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, The English Patient, The Godfather trilogy),

Particle Fever is a celebration of discovery, revealing the very human stories behind this epic machine.

All Young Scientists Should See This!
Review by Dot on 09/08/20 review stating All Young Scientists Should See This!
This movie was shown in my Cinema Club in Madison, CT, a year or so ago. Everyone cheered at the end. I have been watching for it to share with friends and grandsons and teachers and...A young physicist from Yale led the discussion after the movie, and she said she had never heard such cheering for physicists before!

inspiring documentary
Review by Medicus on 07/17/20 review stating inspiring documentary
This is an inspiring rendition of the events leading to the confirmation of the central particle of the standard model of atomic physics. A bit light on the deeper underpinnings of particle physics, but it more than makes up in this with a look at the lives of the theoretical and applied physicists in the run up to the confirmation of the Higgs. The documentary does a fine job explaining the outcomes of the determination of the ma of the Higgs boson at about 125 GEV. Having worked on the periphery of this field, I most appreciated the candid look at a few of the 10,000 people whos lives were revolving around the Higgs confirmation. I watched this with a group of 14 year old students who enjoy science and found they were inspired by the entire story and charactersEUR_Savas Dimopoulos was philosophically stunning.

Interesting dumbed down science...
Review by Luv N. on 07/17/20 review stating Interesting dumbed down science...
Some good photos of the machine, but far too much time watching people eat, jog, dance, chat, talk about press coverage and everything but incisive science. It reminda me of my local science museum that installed mini golf for no particular reason of science nor math application. Also a very heavy dose of feminist affirminative action gender stardom that goes beyond the pale of even PBS mandates for the under represented (no token Black lavished upon tho). Should have been 55 minutes. Should have had more thoughtful science and less press fluff. Should have interviewed the Nobel laureates; they will depart from us and have a precious story.
