Secrets of Althorp - The Spencers

Step inside the family home of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Nestled on over 14,000 acres of English countryside is Althorp House, the childhood home and final resting place of Diana, Princess of Wales. 19 generations of Spencers, one of Britain's most eminent aristocratic dynasties, have lived there for over 500 years. The estate is now in the hands of Diana's brother Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, guardian to a vast wealth of artistic and historical treasures. Works by Rubens and Van Dyck line the walls, while the guest book boasts signatures from such illustrious figures as King William III, Sir Winston Churchill, and Queen Elizabeth II. Earl Spencer leads a personal tour around this noble manor that is to him, above all, still very much a family home, relaying how the history of the house is inextricably bound up with the character, strengths, and weaknesses of those who have lived there before him.

Secrets of Althorp - the Spencers DVD b
Review by Caroline on 06/13/21 review stating Secrets of Althorp - the Spencers DVD b
Good depiction of a grand old English family and estate made greatly famous once one member became royalty, and, a wildly popular media icon. Wonderful views of the inside and outside. Lord Spencer provides a heartfelt overview of his thoughts, the responsibilities and his love for this family home. His sister, Princess Diana is buried in a very private island on the estate, and an entire building devoted to displaying her clothes and personal artifacts in a sensible and informative way, but, is not the focus of this DVD. It is a well presented personal view of family values, and thoughts about preserving historic materials.

You Are There!
Review by Chrisn'di on 07/17/20 review stating You Are There!
I visited Althorp in person a few years ago and this telling is wonderful. I wish there was more about the Diana exhibit because they hardly touch on it. What is impressive are the grounds and much of the Earls sharing about his family and the history of the family. This is beautifully told and a treat to watch over and over, especially if you are a follower of anything to do with English history.
