However, Selfridges was the brain child of an American - Mr. Harry Gordon Selfridge - whose life is depicted in the current MASTERPIECE miniseries Mr. Selfridge. The real, flamboyant Mr. Selfridge brought about a complete revolution in the way that Londoners shopped, introducing a new American retail model which made shopping less of a practical pursuit and more of a luxurious adventure. But there was another one side to the story - Harry's private life. When it began to seep into his business, the effect on him and his store was devastating.

Excellent film!

I really enjoyed seeing this film, in fact I wish I could have seen this before watching the two Mr. Selfridge series films. This went even deeper into Harrys background. It was sad to learn that he eventually died a pauper after living flamboyantly for so many years. His passion for gambling became his ruin. I recommend this film to anyone who has gotten caught up in the story of Selfridge.

Who is Mr Selfridge?

I visited Selfridges Co this past spring after having watched the Masterpiece series 1 2. It is a most imposing building and requires a good deal of exploration. Yes, the revolving doors are at the main entrance, and the entire street level is perfume cosmetics! This DVD gives plenty of history, period photographs, and current views of the interior.

Secrets of Selfridges

This DVD was incredible! My family was fortunate enough to visit Selfridges store in London. This documentary was as if we were there. Mr. Selfridge was a brilliant and wonderful person that did not deserve such a tragic end.

Facinating!

Lived in West End of London two blocks from Selfridges and shopped there for several years. The DVD filled in all the blanks of my wonderment about the magnificent store.

MR. SELFRIDGE

Mr. Selfridge , the story of Harry Gordon Selfridge, his ground breaking store and the lives of the people around him. Superior production values give a glimpse of what London must have been like at the start of the twentieth century. Mr. Selfridge is told in a partially historic and partially dramatized soap opera style. Thoroughly enjoyable. Each episode was over before you expected, or wanted. Superb casting across the board. Jeremy Pivens over-the-top performance is an unexpected pleasure to watch. Extras give a peek of the production and behind the scenes. Watching this series prompted me to do further research. I even bought the documentary on Harry Gordon Selfridge Secrets of Selfridges.

The Secrets are Out! Find out Yourself!

Having been a huge fan of Masterpieces Mr. Selfridge, I have an appetite to gain as much knowledge about this American retail icon who made it huge in London. Lots of interesting facts which made me appreciate the series even more.
