Know Your History
Review by Michael on 02/18/23 review stating Know Your History
If you only know American history from what your public school curriculum served up, you dont know American history. Documentaries like this set the record straight, and as it turns out, they are more amazing than the best works of fiction.

Review by Janet on 02/18/23 review stating Wish the Spanish had held on to North America!
Fascinating accounts of the first years of N Am colonization. The Spanish had a much better philosophy towards both the native peoples and the African immigrants.

Review by Joy on 08/13/22 review stating I wish that everyone would know this history.
I too was blown away by this documentary on PBS. I did not know or realize the impact that the Spaniards had on the early history of North America. All I have ever read or learn about in History class was about the Pilgrims, Plymouth Rock, and Jamestown. We need to hear the whole story, not just one side of the story.

Like the best graduate seminar, ever!
Review by Mailman on 08/13/22 review stating Like the best graduate seminar, ever!
Up-to-date research that posits St. Augustine as the first permanent settlement in the US, which natives know already. But here an all-star group of contemporary academics and experts gives the narrative the feel of a fine graduate seminar in history. (I know, this might seem oxymoronic, but knowledgable and thoughtful teachers of whatever subject in front of a class of motivated students can catch lightning in a bottle. This is one such case.) I watched the two-hour version on PBS in January, 2018. (The DVD is supposed to run 4 hours.) I suggest viewing this in multiple sittings, or risk missing a lot of fascinating details of northeast Florida history, slavery and the human condition.

Lost African-American History
Review by History L. on 08/13/22 review stating Lost African-American History
Every American, especially African Americans, should view this documentary. I never new about the Spanish city of St. Augustine being the settlement for Free blacks and a refuge for runaway slaves. I was also blown away about Francisco Menendez a run away slave who became a general in the Spanish army. AWESOME!

Review by Marguerite on 08/13/22 review stating a fascinating untold story of American History. Thanks PBS
Being an amateur genealogist, I had heard that San Augustine was the first colony in America. But at the time scholars were reluctant to give this award to the Spanish. Now there is plenty of proof. This should be a tool used by American History teachers. This was a most interesting and very well done.

Fantastic! Very enjoyable and well-informed, as well a nicely paced. Provides information which is little-known to American audiences, and in fact blows some current prevalent myths. There should be more videos along this line.

Entertaining but biased
Review by Dan M. on 06/27/22 review stating Entertaining but biased
This is an entertaining documentary worth watching but biased towards a pro-Catholic viewpoint. Throughout the entire unraveling of the story of Spain's colonization efforts of the 16th-19th centuries, the film goes to great lengths to depict Spain as godly saints versus the Anglican devils that overtook them. Definately has interesting tidbits of info you won't find in most history books but comes off as pro-Catholic propaganda most of the time.

This was enjoyable, if painful to watch. That kings could give away land that they really did not own is so arrogant. History is a good teacher, if only we would learn
