Slavery by Another Name, narrated by Laurence Fishburne, is a 90-minute documentary that challenges one of Americans' most cherished assumptions: that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in the South after the Civil War, new systems of involuntary servitude took its place with shocking force and brutality. The film documents how for more than 80 years, thousands of African Americans, often guilty of no crime at all, were arrested, compelled to work without pay, repeatedly bought and sold, and coerced to do the bidding of white masters. Tolerated by both the North and South, forced labor lasted well into the 20th century.

Slavery by Another Name, based upon the Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Douglas A. Blackmon, gives voice to the largely forgotten victims and perpetrators of forced labor and features moving interviews with their descendants living today. A distinguished group of historians provides context and perspective on one of the most shameful and little known chapters in American history.

And I thought I knew ...
Review by Nancy on 03/17/22 review stating And I thought I knew ...
I thought I already knew about convict leasing from reading The NEW Jim Crow and watching the documentary 13th. But this went into much more depth and allowed me to see individual human beings behind the statistics. Deeply disturbing and heartbreaking, but so important for contemporary Americans to understand. I saw it as part of a class, and am purchasing my own copy so I can create film nights with small groups of friends and colleagues. Kudos to PBS for making this info available.

Instrumental in filling in the ancestral gaps. Purchase this film at any cost. Exposes the reason that Africans Americans have never been truly free. Peonage is still being practiced within the prison system today.

13th Amendment Loophole
Review by Vicar on 06/15/21 review stating 13th Amendment Loophole
The abrupt end of Reconstruction with the removal of Federal Troops in 1870s, allowed Southern Whites to reinstate slavery by incarceration, Klan terrorism and blatant abuse of judicial system. Eye opening and heart wrenching. Every HS civics class should be required to watch. Then a sequel needs to be shown of how this 13th Amendment Loophole continues to create slaves and permanently disenfranchisement to this day.

The true untold story that has finally been documented.
Review by New W. on 06/15/21 review stating The true untold story that has finally been documented.
Many Black American families know of these stories and or had them happen to their relatives. Unfortunately the people who should see this documentary would rather not. By keeping it hidden a real dialogue about race relations will never happen. Thanks for making it available!

The Post Civil War Period
Review by Mel on 09/20/20 review stating The Post Civil War Period
The period in history between the end of the Civil War (Reconstruction) and the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement, is not as well known as the Civil War period and the Civil Rights Movement. This is an excellent portrayal of what it was like for our African-American ancestors in the post Civil War period. Though enslaved Africa-Americans were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation, another form of slavery emerged which was just as sinister.

Untold History
Review by Elle on 07/17/20 review stating Untold History
This documentary tells a part of history to which most of us have never been exposed. This is not the part of any school curriculum, not even during Black History Month. The film offered a great deal of substantive evidence that can lead to additional research. It was heartbreaking but an era that needs to brought to the forefront.

I was shocked and surprised at some of the things that was revealed in this DVD. I do believe that if more American would watch this DVD and digest its contents we would have a much better understanding about race relations in America today.

Very Eye Opening!
Review by Lilly M. on 07/17/20 review stating Very Eye Opening!
Having always been sympathetic to the civil rights movement,I thought that I knew the trials tribulations that black folks had been through in the 20th century. This film opened my eyes up to how horrific things were, even beyond what I believed them to be. In some ways, many black people had it worse after emancipation, because they were no longer valued as property. Buy this and give it to a white supremacist.

Review by Lover S. on 07/17/20 review stating Slavery today
This was not an easy DVD to watch as I hope it wouldnt be for any decent human being. The information presented is not pleasant because we like to think Racism is dying and that slavery in this country is dead.Well, this documentary puts those illusions to rest and does it with facts and examples. Its really a must see.

Slavery By Another Name is one of the best documentaries I have ever watched. Anyone who believes that African Americans were ever granted true equality of citizenship with whites in this country will have their illusion shattered by this DVD. The shows why even to this day there is no true equality under the law between African Americans and whites.

History at Its Useful Best
Review by History D. on 07/17/20 review stating History at Its Useful Best
Slavery By Another Name connects the dots of Americas ongoing dependance on race based oppression and exploitation. When American chattel slavery ended it was a joyous moment for the black people held in bondage and those who opposed slavery. But, it was really only a moment. This production shows how and why the joy was short lived; knowledge omitted in most recountings.

It explained the fear that has traveled down through the generations. Fear of a wrong step, accidentally being in the wrong place and the possibility that you may not live to explain that you were not the problem but an innocent human just trying to live. Some things have not changed.

Outstanding PBS. This is a great depiction of the obstacles Black Americans faced at the hands of White Industrialists, and White Government officials on the National State and local levels, after the civil war. Certainly I would suggest American History and Government and public policy teachers to make this video a part of their teaching resources. Students will definitely find that the subject matter of the peonage System and share cropping will be more than what their textbooks have provided. The 80 year period following the civil war will look totally different.

This is a story that needed to be told. That slavery, an institution in America for 400 yrs did not end with a proclamation, an amendment or even a war.

A convincing insight into why there is so much distrust in our society. Thank you for putting this together and allow me to come to grips with the extent of mans inhumanity to man.

Why dont we all learn from our past
Review by Tired B. on 07/17/20 review stating Why dont we all learn from our past
It appears that certain value can be gleaned from these horrific happenings that was manifested in this country prior to the emancipation and freedom of the blacks in all of these United States, not just the Southern states. There is enough blame and remorse to go around for all, and if the other states would own up to exactly how they contributed to the Bondage of the Black rece, then we as a nation might begin to outgrow this baggage which is still being funneled in our direction and rubbing our noises in it while hoping that we southerners would continue in being the whipping boy for all of the carpet baggers and scoundrels of the remainder of this great nation while they still turn a profit on this cancer that still gets treated by rubbing salt into the wounds of slavery. It was the northern states that industrialized the south while they turned their eyes towards the financial gains they made thru discriminatory policies and rules while lugging their booty to the banks. As I recall even in the early 1970s Boston, Mass was still resisting integration and forced busing long after the south had begun reconciliation of the races. So I say lets all quit the whining and look forward, perhaps this would prove more productive in the long run to our society.

Truly informative!
Review by Nat on 07/17/20 review stating Truly informative!
This documentary is very informative and yet disturbing to known that this practice went on in the south even after the abolishment of slavery is unbelievable. This documentary should be a requirement for American History classes and should serve as a reminder of how governments circumvent laws.

Thank you PBS
Review by Jean review stating Thank you PBS
Even though this video was difficult to watch and often I found myself crying, I am so glad I saw it. I so hope other African Americans view it and gain a greater appreciation for what our ancestors suffered and realize how strong and perservering we are as a people. It also motivated me to read other information about us. I want our young people to see this. Maybe it will influence them to avoid incarceration in our present prison system, which since it was privatized is becoming more and more like this earlier system. Thank you, PBS for educating me on another sad, but enlightening part of my history. You need to know where you came from to know where you want or dont want to go and to love who you are.

Any student of historys education would be incomplete without a full understanding of this period in American history. It is truly a story of how far the African American community has progressed in the United States, but resets the clock from that illusory point of freedom we all call The Emancipation, to the point at which the system truly dismantled institutionalized slavery.

Stopped today???
Review by Alice W. review stating Stopped today???
A wonderful documentary. However, this still goes on in South Carolina. Prison Industries in SC is required by state laws to pay minimum wages to the inmates. They make 35 cents an hour. The state than takes from the 35 cents room board and restitution. The inmates at Lieber Prison started a class action law suite for back pay. It is being dragged through the courts today. Once an inmate is released from prison they are removed from the law suite. Slavery still goes on in prison industries. There are still illegal contracts. Thank you for bringing this to light.
