FRONTLINE: Who Was Lee Harvey Oswald?

FRONTLINE marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Kennedy assassination with a two-hour reprise of its investigative biography of the man at the center of the political crime of the 20th century. At the heart of the assassination lies the puzzle of Lee Harvey Oswald: Was he the emotionally disturbed lone gunman of the 1964 Warren Commission report? Was he, as the House Select Committee on Assassinations concluded, probably part of a conspiracy on that day in Dallas? Or was he an unwitting fall guy, the patsy, as Oswald himself claimed when he was arrested on November 22, 1963?

Twenty years ago, in the most comprehensive attempt on American television to penetrate this enduring enigma, FRONTLINE's investigative team spent more than a year reexamining Oswald's life and sifting through the psychological, political, and forensic evidence of his role in the assassination. Traveling to Japan, Russia, Europe, Mexico, Canada, and across the United States, the team uncovered new witnesses, documents, photographs, video and audio recordings of Lee Oswald, many of which had never before been made public.

Edited version loses credibility
Review by Lawrence on 08/12/22 review stating Edited version loses credibility
I recorded the original Frontline story on VHS tape in 1993, and wanted to have a crisp copy on DVD - but noticed that it has been edited down to 120 minutes. I cant imagine how you can edit out almost an hour of material and remain faithful to the extensive research that was done for the 93 story. A DVD version should have MORE on it, not less; very disappointing...

Guess I Wont Be Ordering This

I have the 3 hour VHS tape I recorded in 93. I was happy to see it had been released on DVD, but the reviews here indicate that the editing has removed an hour of the original version. The original version is excellent. The interviews with Oswalds brother were the best part of this biography, and it appears a lot of them are cut from the new DVD. Guess Ill stick with my old tape.

Why re-edited?
Review by Greg S. on 08/12/22 review stating Why re-edited?
The original version of this documentary is easily the best, most insightful account of LHOs life and motivations. Now, for the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination, a re-edited version has been made available. Sadly, much of what made this documentary so compelling has been lost. With the deletion of approx. 1 hour of material, the film lacks the detail and impact of the original version. Lost are many of Robert Oswalds recollections of LHOs childhood, and other interesting details that made this documentary shine above all others. A second mistake is being made by not offering the unedited version on DVD, where possible time constraints are no longer an issue. If this was the same film aired in 93 and 03, it would be an easy 5 stars. As is, with much of its impact excised, it only rates a 3. How sad.

Sadly, PBS has chosen to be part of the coverup

How come the extraordinary words of Jack Ruby were ignored (in both editions)? I have a tip for folks who would like to disseminate some JFK material: go to NPR (or Democracy Now) instead of PBS. See The Devils Chessboard as a perfect example.

Everyone should see this program. Those who lived through that experience recall only too well the issues and the drama surrounding Lee Harvey Oswald.

Original Airing Was Almost An Hour Longer

One of the best docs on LHO that I have seen. Fairly objective and thoughrough. The only thing that is better with the DVD is the quality )as oppossed to taping the original broadcast) But it cut out some key footage!

Could Have Been Better
Review by Randy O. on 07/17/20 review stating Could Have Been Better
Nice to finally have this extraordinary documentary on DVD 20 years later. But it could have been better. The full 3-hour original version would have been better instead of this edited version. One of the things missing is the original report on the controversy over the Walker shooting. Also, it appears a new version of the Zapruder film has been substituted for the one used on the original broadcast. This new version contains film debris on the fatal headshot frame, Z-313, making it appear debris from the wound is exiting forward. Im still waiting to hear from the producers if they did indeed replace the film with this newer, flawed version.
