In a hidden realm at the end of the world, amidst the massive ice mountains of Chile's Torres del Paine National Park, condors soar, colorful caracaras keep a sharp eye out for prey, graceful guanacos roam, and vivid pink flamingos make a theatrical appearance.

But this kingdom is the stronghold of the puma, a large mountain lion that hunts for guanacos – cousins of llamas – from the valleys to the hillsides. Follow the fate of a female puma in her prime as she hunts and teaches her four young cubs how to live in this extraordinary landscape.

An outstanding video of a puma family. The story illustrates the point that mountain lion kittens need about two years with their mother to learn their trade and become independent. Unfortunately, in North America, trophy hunting of cougars creates many orphans that cannot survive. While the video tells an excellent story, someone interested in pumas can see common behaviors that go unmentioned. For instance, the narrator, Uma Thurman, describes the stalking cat as carefully choosing its steps to minimize noise. If the viewer observes closely, s/he can see the cat registers its steps: the rear foot automatically steps where the front foot stepped. A great adaptation for stealth. Pumas open their prey carcasses behind the ribs to first eat the vital organs, a source of essential amino acids. The cats tuft an area on their prey, removing its hair before opening the carcass. When we see the female on a kill, we can see the tufts of hair scattered about. We also see her take a tuft and work it out of her mouth. During the usurped kill scene, we may have witnessed behavior that camera traps and videos are exposing, and we are just now starting to understand. The male and female shared a meal, and the male may have yielded with hopes of being a successful father in the future. Often male pumas kill dependent kittens to bring an adult female into estrus. Perhaps, she abruptly ended the mutual feeding as a warning to the male that she would not tolerate interference in her current family. Pumas are cryptic, but we have seen more and more transactions as we learn to study from afar. The cats pass close by the photographers, and everyone, pumas and people, is calm as neither group is a threat to the other. There is no hype of the danger being close to killing machines that will kill whatever moves. This video is an honest portrayal of an apex carnivore that goes about its business, whether raising or providing for a family or self, I highly recommend Legends of the ice mountains, especially for people interested in cats.
