I first watched this program on T.V. the very first time and loved it so much I felt the need to purchase it. I watched it last night and again was in awe at how deeply this man felt and how he saw and lived life in the moment. This was an exceptional film about an exceptional man. Thank you PBS for sharing this magnificent man with the world.

I bought this DVD not so long ago and it brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. I was a kid when he died. What an excellent human being he was; on and off the baseball field. Future generations need to know his story. In my heart and in the hearts of many, hell always be The Great One.

More than a baseball player
Review by Eric S. on 07/17/20 review stating More than a baseball player
He died... when I was 12 years old. I was then just a Baseball fan that love him as a player. After I grow up, I learned the rest of the story, where he came from, how he had to make so many sacrifices and endured the hard reality of racism in the United States to become one of the best players to ever played the game of baseball; plus all the acts of kindness he did through his life year after year... fighting for justice for all, but specially for Latin American players, only then I saw Clementes complete picture. He became to me a great example, a role model, one to be admired and emulated. There is no question that Clemente was one of the greatest humanitarians of his generation and I believe the greatest in the Sport World. This PBS documentary let you see a complete picture of who Roberto Clemente was... He was more than a player, he was a true humanitarian. The way he died make him a Legend for future generations. On December 31, 1972 at 9:30pm when the World was having parties, enjoying their family and friends, having fun... Clemente left all behind him to go and help people from another country, not his... just because they were humans in need of help (Earth wake victims in Nicaragua). There is no greater love than this... that someone will lay down his life for his friends!-J.C.- Clemente did it for people he didnt know... which makes his sacrifice even greater! *** What and example of Love... Roberto Clemente left us!! *** This is the greatest act of kindness and self sacrifice that someone can give to the World!!! P.S.(My childs middle name is Clemente in honor of Roberto.)

Review by B. W. on 07/17/20 review stating Very Interesting, wiith some surprises (about Whitman)
I had never heard how complex Walt Whitmans life was. Also, didnt realize how much of a roll he played in the civil war. It made me wonder if some of his creativity was due to mental health issues. This was a highly entertaining video, very interesting and informative. Dont worry, it wasnt a poetry reading...

This program gathered all the various theories and conjectures without editorializing on any anwers...something we will probably never have. It included photos and interviews I have never seen and Ive been a student since the day it happened - well worth purchasing for your Kennedy fact finding collection.

Interesting
Review by Jim on 07/17/20 review stating Interesting
The point of the program is to reveal how the Kennedy assassination has changed Americas attitude toward government and authority in general, regardless of the facts. A national mood of superstition and irrationality has descended, exemplified by the fact that people believe in conspiracies, but when pressed cant elucidate beyond generalizations.

A Baseball player and a Humanitarian.
Review by Rafael on 07/17/20 review stating A Baseball player and a Humanitarian.
Its hard to believe its been 39 years since Roberto Clemente was taken from us in a plane crash. Yet his spirit, his humanitarianism and overall decency remain equal to his achievements on the baseball field. This American Experience DVD is the quintessential biography of this legend. In spite of racial attitudes of the time, Roberto Clemente rose far above it all. He did not have to prove himself a man to anyone. That he was. Yet he proved himself a gifted ballplayer who brought pride not to himself, but to Puerto Rico, the Nation, Latin America and baseball itself. Yet beyond this, he was color-blind to race, creed or national origin. When the 1972 earthquake struck Managua, Nicaragua, the true essence of who Roberto was emerged. Borders were no obstacles to his reaching out to those suffering and in need. That is how he lived and to the very end. He will never be forgotten on and off the baseball field.

Review by Admonern on 07/17/20 review stating A study of anthropology in the Dark Age
An unbelievable and heartbreaking story. Indigenous people were really not thought of as equals- they were experiments for anthropologists of the day. This poor little boys horror story at the hands of scientists, is shocking and reprehensible. PBS did a great job in telling this important story.

Technology and ambition gone awry
Review by A B. review stating Technology and ambition gone awry
Lobotomy is a subject we rarely hear about and many would like to sweep it under the rug. The story of the man is interesting enough but the history of the medical procedure and its initial acceptance by society is chilling. Not only a top notch production, this informative expose brings to light the very real danger of ambition without restraint and the technology that is readily available to accomodate it.

Review by Springbok review stating Moving tribute to a real American hero.
As a child I learned to idolize Clemente. Its enlightening as an adult to rediscover that here was a man who truly deserved my youthful admiration. He was simply the best, both as an athlete and a human being. The documentary is excellent - it should have been three hours long.
