Based on the best-selling book by Drew Gilpin Faust, this film will explore how the American Civil War created a "republic of suffering" and will chart the far-reaching social, political, and social changes brought about by the pervasive presence and fear of death during the Civil War.

From acclaimed filmmaker Ric Burns, Death and the Civil War explores an essential but largely overlooked aspect of the most pivotal event in American history. With the coming of the Civil War, and the staggering casualties it ushered in, death entered the experience of the American people as it never had before - permanently altering the character of the republic, and the psyche of the American people. The work of contending with death on an unprecedented scale propelled extraordinary changes in the inner and outer life of Americans - posing challenges for which there were no ready answers when the war began - challenges that called forth remarkable and eventually heroic efforts as Americans worked to improvise new solutions, new institutions, new ways of coping with death on an unimaginable scale.

Based on Drew Gilpin Faust's groundbreaking book, This Republic of Suffering - the film tracks the increasingly lethal arc of the war, from all but bloodless opening, through the chaos of Shiloh, Antietam, and Gettysburg - down through the struggle, in the war's aftermath, to cope with an American landscape littered with the bodies of hundreds of thousands of soldiers, many unburied, most unidentified.

This compilation of still shots, excellent script, some music is totally enthralling. I recorded it on American Experience and truly requires your full attention and reverence. That was an era when folks actually wrote eloquently with excellent penmanship. their expressions of pain are so moving. I plan to rewatch it and try to absorb the absolute horrific experience that so many young men of that era experienced--I read that in todays numbers, it would be like 7 million killed. that should cause all to reflect.

Excellent documentary
Review by Pants on 12/21/20 review stating Excellent documentary
This documentary shows the Civil War from a perspective few people explore or even think about. It details a country unprepared for dealing with so much death and offers authentic letters from soldiers just before they died, as well as first hand accounts from local citizens given the responsibility of disposing of the dead. This is a DVD worth getting.

War and Piece
Review by Janelle B. on 07/17/20 review stating War and Piece
Every war has death, but this American Experience program exploring how Americans came to view death brings to the contemporary viewer a sobering aspect of the Civil War. Most of us dont think about how such a basic fact of life as death can change over the generations. Now we will.

Death at a distance.
Review by History D. on 07/17/20 review stating Death at a distance.
Good explanation of how major events have changed the course of history. This presentation shows the tragedy of the American Civil War. The devastating effects on families, communities, states and the nation. It also helps to explain how dealing with death and dying became the impersonal, solitary practice of the current culture.

I was overwhelmed. Its a side of the civil war that was rarely talked about. What are we going to do with all the dead and dying?
