American Experience: The Abolitionists

Radicals. Agitators. Troublemakers. Liberators. Called many names, the abolitionists tore the nation apart in order to create a more perfect union. Men and women, black and white, Northerners and Southerners, poor and wealthy - these passionate anti-slavery activists fought body and soul in the most important civil rights crusade in American history. What began as a pacifist movement fueled by persuasion and prayer became a fiery and furious struggle that forever changed the nation.

Bringing to life the intertwined stories of Frederick Douglass, William Lloyd Garrison, Angelina Grimké, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and John Brown, The Abolitionists takes place during some of the most violent and contentious decades in American history. It reveals how the movement shaped history by exposing the fatal flaw of a republic founded on liberty for some and bondage for others. In the face of personal risks - beatings, imprisonment, even death - abolitionists held fast to their cause, laying the civil rights groundwork for the future and raising weighty constitutional and moral questions that are still with us today.

Directed by Rob Rapley, The Abolitionists interweaves drama with traditional documentary storytelling, and stars Richard Brooks, Neal Huff, Jeanine Serralles, Kate Lyn Sheil, and T. Ryder Smith, vividly bringing to life the epic struggles of the men and women who ended slavery.

Historic figures come to life.
Review by History D. on 09/26/21 review stating Historic figures come to life.
The DVD brings history to life. It makes historic figures into real people that todays children and adults can identify with not just a name to memorize for a test. Too often history is viewed as a boring subject. Programs like this not only help to explain the ideology behind certain events, but help to bring names in history books to life.

Every American should watch this series.
Review by Jackjack on 09/26/21 review stating Every American should watch this series.
This is the stuff I never understood in history class during the seventh grade. Mere dates and places and raw facts obscured the real stories. Every American needs to know this story. What really led up to the Civil War. We are still today living with the effects of slavery and that war, over 150 years later. I wouldnt say this is the most thorough documentary on the subject, as its the only one Ive ever seen. I had heard all the names before: John Brown, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe, William Lloyd Garrison. I knew the cotton gin was invented by Eli Whitney. Now I have a much better appreciation and understanding of how it all fits together.

Abolionists- first of three parts on Ame
Review by Maggie on 07/17/20 review stating Abolionists- first of three parts on Ame
I thought that the program did an excellant portral of the passionate, evangelical influences that were prevelant in the early 1800s, leading to the call for the dissolution of slavery. This does not often get portrayed in our US History texts- the moral contridiction between actual life and the founding principles of our nation.

humanist abolitionists
Review by Ftf on 07/17/20 review stating humanist abolitionists
The Abolitionists is very informative and moving. However, it have been better if the secularism of key abolitionists, such as William Lloyd Garrison, had been more clearly stated. Religion was used to both defend and attack slavery. Humanism/secularism stood against slavery.

I thought the program was very informative and beautifully shot. Performances were well done and captured the period and qualities of those focused on and the shameful period in our countrys history. An important program and educational tool, which I would encourage all educators and citizens to partake of to appreciate the progress thats been made and the work that needs to continue for the betterment of all cultures and societies.

Abolitionists-Best Documentary Ever
Review by Dj on 07/17/20 review stating Abolitionists-Best Documentary Ever
Watched this movie with teary eyes all the while thanking the likes of William Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Angelina Grimke, Harriett Stowe, John Brown, Harriett Tubman, Nat Turner, and William Still for their heroic efforts to end slavery. Many people will go to church on Sunday and praise a deity, however, on Monday they do not want to associate with a human from a different culture. Hopefully one day humans will judge others by their good deeds and not because of their ethnic background.

The truth
Review by Jeff F. on 07/17/20 review stating The truth
This documentary like The West continued to bring tears to my eyes. I am of African and Native American ancestry and the voice of peace under cruel and evil tyranny is vital message to all those who follow Christ. Any other attitude is a lie.

"Combining dramatic recreations with insight from historians, this excellent documentary captures the passions, struggles, arguments, despair, and ultimate steely resolve of the abolitionist movement. Highly recommended." - Video Librarian
