Chasing Shackleton

Can six men endure Shackleton's Antarctic rescue mission today?

Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance expedition is the most extraordinary story of leadership and survival ever. After their ship was crushed in Antarctic pack ice, Shackleton and five of his crew embarked on an 800-nautical mile winter crossing of the roughest ocean on the planet in a tiny wooden boat, weathering 100-foot waves and hurricane-force winds. After reaching land, Shackleton and his team pressed on and traversed a 3000-meter mountain range to make it to civilization and get help for the 28 men that remained behind on the pack ice. Shackleton's epic adventure has never been repeated - until now.

Using a replica boat, and the same equipment and clothing as would have been used in 1914, explorer Tim Jarvis and his crew attempt to follow in Shackleton's wake, going beyond the point of no return, using their firsthand extreme experience measured against historical accounts to unlock the secrets of Shackleton's survival. Can modern man live up to one of the greatest legends in polar history? Will Tim and his team survive to tell the tale of Chasing Shackleton?

Horse Radish!!

You can NOT compare this pre-planned, GPS supported, helicopter rescue in the wings re-creation with the real thing. Not even close. I should have know better when PBS even got the facts WRONG on the liner notes on the cover. The 28 remaining men that needed to be rescued were NOT stranded on pack ice, they were on Elephant Island. Just another over-sensationalized blow out. Shame on PBS.

I only caught small segments of this series on my local PBS channel and it caught my immediate interest. I am very interested in this type of adventure, as is my son. I had to have this DVD, to see the entire version and also to send it to my son. This is extremely well done, you can almost share the experience as it is happening. My son will love it.

Saga of bewildering human perseverence
Review by Terry T. on 07/17/20 review stating Saga of bewildering human perseverence
Tale of todays men who are time traveled back 100 years to replicate the rescue mission of Sir Ernest Shackleton, with the same technology and advances that existed in 1914. The human dimension is the only variable. The film accurately depicts the weaknesses and frailties of man that Shackleton overcame. A true hero, its doubtful that an undertaking anything close to his rescue could be repeated, ever!

Chasing Shakleton DVD

I didnt even know the story of Shakletons amazing journey and leadership until a few years ago. When I saw that I could get this on my server, I watched it - all at once, as I could not stop! I then bought the set for my son and his three young boys, as it is one of the TOP documentaries Ive ever seen about when folks can and will do when faced with the unbelievable challenges these men faced. The story, relived by these men and documented step by step, truly made me feel as if I were doing myself. The one fellow, commenting that hed never felt closer to Shackleton and his men and that he felt as if he were TRULY living in history hit me very strongly. I cant recommend this enough - it was spectacular!

Gripping
Review by Bob on 07/17/20 review stating Gripping
Last month I visited the country where Sir Ernest performed his heroic endeavor (Elephant Island, Weddell Sea, South Georgia)so this program had extra meaning for me. And, yes, the guys in the film suffered and struggled just like the Shackleton crew, but the Boss had NO modern backup to save him if he messed up. So his accomplishment is undiminished.
