Soul Food Junkies

Food traditions are hard to change, especially when they're passed on from generation to generation. In this PBS documentary, award-winning filmmaker Byron Hurt shares his journey to learn more about the African American cuisine known as soul food.

Baffled by his dad's reluctance to change his traditional soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, Hurt sets out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. He discovers that the love affair that his dad and his community have with soul food is deep-rooted, complex, and in some tragic cases, deadly.

Through candid interviews with soul food cooks, historians, and scholars, as well as doctors, family members, and everyday people, Soul Food Junkies blends history, humor, and heartwarming stories to place this culinary tradition under the microscope. Both the consequences and the benefits of soul food are carefully addressed. So too is the issue of low access to quality food in black communities, which makes it difficult for some black people to eat healthy. In the end, Hurt determines whether or not black people are addicted to this food tradition that has its origins in West Africa and the black south, yet is loved all over the world.

A Film for Posterity!
Review by Jennifer P. on 01/01/21 review stating A Film for Posterity!
Thank you Mr. Hurt. I have been waiting for a movie like this for a long time! I fell in love with this film by the 10 minute mark! My husband and I were overwhelmed with pride and emotion just viewing the beautiful faces of the subjects--old and young--many of who looked so much like us or our relatives with their beautiful, radiant faces, smiles, and juicy cheeks! Mr. Hurts film touched me deeply. This film goes way beyond food and health for me. It is a celebration of my heritage and legacy of my origins from Africa-America. With so many disparate views of what it means to be of African descent in America, it is my hope that quality films like this will have folks talking and feeling good about blackness for a long time to come. We were so moved that we are planning a parlor party for a group of our friends to view and dialog about it. The only thing extra that I would have appreciated is some sort of companion site with ideas on how to discuss this topic with groups. Very powerful, moving, and well-executed.

Touches your heart as well as your soul!
Review by Mrs. H. on 01/01/21 review stating Touches your heart as well as your soul!
Food for the heart as well as the soul is not always healthy - for anybody. If you are of African descent, this film will minister to both as we discover the reasons soul food became the food of choice for African families. But more than that,Byron Hurt shares the wonderful story of his Daddy, who struggled with an addiction to soul food. Byron also shows many positive examples of people who are changing generational patterns of eating and discovering a new life! A story for all cultures and such a delicious film! Thank you!

A sleepless night viewing has brought me to my computer to order this profound TV film. To better understand respective food needs, I plan for my mixed race family to watch Byron Hurts sensitive, informative production when we are vacationing together next month. It has changed my menu for my share-day to cook.
