Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World Narrated by Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey), the film brings to life the great adventure story of Luther's struggle. Undoubtedly, Martin Luther was one of the last most influential and interesting people of the last millennium. The film vividly portrays the key moments in his story: the massive lightning storm that nearly killed him, the bleak self-punishment of his time in the monastery, the corruption that unleashed his anger, the theological breakthrough that reset Christian thought, his trial before the most powerful man in Europe, the staged kidnapping that helped him escape the death penalty, and his ongoing drive to reform the church.

Accurate, understandable portrayal of this important figure.
Review by Deb on 07/17/20 review stating Accurate, understandable portrayal of this important figure.
This timely movie, in the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, did an excellent job of portraying Luther as he was--a flawed, yet determined man God used to bring the church back to the truths of his Word.

Review by Scruffy's M. on 07/17/20 review stating Wonderful informative progran
I plan on buying this ASAP, program just aired tonight. It was informative, balanced historically accurate and unbiased. It captured the culture, both political and ecclesiastical of the time and showed how Luthers dedication to Scripture was the basis of his beliefs. Just marvelous, and extremely well done.

Martin Luther --- The 500-year Teacher and Renaissance Man
Review by History F. on 07/17/20 review stating Martin Luther --- The 500-year Teacher and Renaissance Man
The Medicis, the Roman Catholic hierarchy, the princes of the German states, and the printing press are all combined in the film with Martin Luthers teachings, catechism, and reforming questions to recreate the fervor and drama of the times. Very strong production values highlight the politics, lifestyle, marriage, emotions, danger, and life-threatening risk surrounding the university professor who simply wanted to make things right. This is one of the finest portrayals of the life and 500-year influence of Martin Luther. Very absorbing, while accurately documenting the explosive re-formation of the church and European society.

Fabulous Documentary
Review by Uvugdb on 07/17/20 review stating Fabulous Documentary
This is a fabulous documentary! I did not know the timeline of Martin Luther or the Protestant Reformation and am amazed at how quickly Luthers ideas spread throughout Europe. I am very grateful for his contribution; it made possible the establishment of the United States of America with our freedom of religion 249 years later.

A sweeping biography of one of the most influential figures of the 14th century. Wonderfully narrated and photographed, Martin Luthers story could be described as simply his rediscovery of grace. Martin had an intense sense that he was not really good inside. That he could not please God by what he did, no matter how hard he tried, how much he prayed, how badly he felt for his sins. It was his study of the Bible, in the Book of Romans, which revealed how he could be forgiven. His sins could be taken away, and he could be declared righteous, not by any merit of his own, but by the merits of Jesus Christ alone. In this way his life, once characterized by guilt and anguish, became filled with grace and inner peace. Martin never set out to change the world, and yet he did. Thanks for reading my thoughts on this movie. Blessings to you.
