No close captions
Review by Theresa T. on 08/16/23 review stating No close captions
As someone who wears hearing aids the lack of close captioning made the film difficult to follow even with the volume turned way up. Dont know why they opted not to do close captioning; it was done on Skinwalkers but not on this one or Thief of Time. Still, I enjoyed it very much. I would have given this more stars if it had the close captioning.

Blu-ray Version a MUST!!
Review by Greg on 08/18/22 review stating Blu-ray Version a MUST!!
With my dreams of retiring to the southwest literally up in smoke, thanks to human driven climate change, all I'll have from this point on are fantasies about what could have been-and living images of what was decades ago. As wonderful as this Tony Hillerman trilogy looks on DVD the n Blu-ray editon is long overdue-and it will make every one of those New Mexican landscapes look absolutely stunning. Please make it happen this year! Thanks.

Please Release Blu Ray Editions of all Three Tony Hillerman Movies.
Review by Greg B. on 08/18/22 review stating Please Release Blu Ray Editions of all Three Tony Hillerman Movies.
Decades before the deadly consequences of human driven climate change hit the region as bad as were now seeing, the Southwest was my long sought retirement destination. With those plans now literally up in smoke, these images of captivating New Mexican landscapes are all Ill have left of dreams of what could have been. The long overdue Blu Ray edition of the Robert Redford produced Coyote Waits and Thief of Time can make those Big Sky Country scenes all but jump off the screen into my living room. Please make it happen this year. Thanks.

Such a fan, needs digital copy.
Review by BigFan on 07/02/22 review stating Such a fan, needs digital copy.
I used to watch this when it was featured on tv back in the day, and always wondered why only 3 episodes were shown. Only to realize decades later when it appeared on Netflix that it was a miniseries and only 3 episodes where made. I didnt even know it was several novels until I did a internet search on why only 3 episodes. Such a shame as I enjoy all 3 just as much today as back then. The actors, writing, and music still stand true through time and just as relavant today as back then. The whole thing is so powerful, it stays with you. I wish they had made a full show back then, but hope it gets revived today. I used to have all 3 episodes downloaded on my cellphone from Netflix until it expired. Then I tracked down all 3 dvds and can watch at home now. My only issue is that the dvds dont have a digital copy of the episodes, or sell the digital copies on any platform such as iTunes from PBS. It would be great if PBS also made their dvds with a digital copy as I cant portably take the whole series with me when I travel, I can only watch at home. I would definitely pay extra for the digital copy. And fingers crossed a full show is made soon. Also, started on the novels as well and searching for audiobook versions of them to take with me.

Loved the twists and turns of the story. The characters are all real people, with real backgrounds and feelings. Definately my view of the characters and the book. I would like to see more of Tony Hillermans stories.

Mystery: Coyote Waits
Review by Serilda on 08/18/20 review stating Mystery: Coyote Waits
As a Hillerman fan I was skeptical that the movie would do the book justice, but this is another winner! The haunting imagery of the southwest and the Native spirituality comes through.Great production!

Great mystery - true to Hillermans novel
Review by Kent on 08/18/20 review stating Great mystery - true to Hillermans novel
This is very well done TV mystery. All of the location shots in the American southwest add greatly to the story. Hillermans story brings out the culture of modern Native Americans and their connections to their traditions. I highly recommend this video.

Coyote
Review by Tracey on 07/17/20 review stating Coyote
Love Tony Hillermans novels as I enjoy his well researched stories and learning about the history and cultural beliefs of the Southwest tribes. I have two other movies based on his books; this one fell short in that unless one has read the book it would be hard to follow the movie line. Also, the scene where Lt. Leaphorn is looking out with his dark glasses the moment was ruined as the movie camera is reflected in his lens. Come on now... Mr. Hillerman deserves better. The actors were well selected and did a good job in their portrayals.

Very satisfied with product. Have read all the Hillerman books. Found the movie lived up to the book. Interesting characters and spectacular scenery. Worth watching if only for the views of the Arizona mesas.

Excellent Hillerman Story
Review by Jsquare on 07/17/20 review stating Excellent Hillerman Story
This is an excellent story from Hillerman, a solid who-dunnit that has a sad but appropriate close. Definitely entertaining. The sound occasionally fades so I did a rewind to rehear some parts.

Mystery and culture
Review by Avocet7 on 07/17/20 review stating Mystery and culture
For me, the most interesting part of Coyote Waits is the allusion to, in this case, the Navajo culture that could be further explored such as the title and to whom one was permitted to speak within the Clan structure. also, the stunning images of this southwestern landscape illustrate what Hillerman has so deftly woven together in the ideas of regard for the Earth and personal ethics.

The Coyote Waits Expectantly
Review by Book D. on 07/17/20 review stating The Coyote Waits Expectantly
The late Tony Hillermans mystery novels set in the four-corners area of the Southwest are among my favorite mysteries. Hillerman had a spare way with language as spare yet colorful as the country and peoples he described. He drew strong plots, vivid characters, and a deep undercurrent of love for the native American peoples who made up the focus of his stories. Through all of them runs a significant absence of violence; despite the murder(s) around which the plots focus, retribution comes by the outworking of natural forces rather than the quickness of the tribal policemens weapons. Coyote Waits is one of my favorite Hillerman novels. I was curious how a TV drama would capture Hillermans telling of this morality tale. This American Mystery Special production does a fine job of capturing the plot, the setting, and the general shape of the characters. The visual setting, in particular, is especially gripping, even to one who has actually seen the four corners a number of times and doesnt have to imagine it. The characters are well acted and usually seem to resonate with the novels characters. I do have a couple of quibbles, however. The Janet Peete character is plotted in the film as a Navajo attorney; in the book shes Anglo. That changes the force of Jim Chees concern to please her from the more complicated relationship of the book with the questions it raises for Chee to a much simpler one in the film. I also found the Joe Leaphorn character in the film to be less like the one in the book than I expected - more intense and pressing, quicker with a gun, so to speak. Quibbles aside, I found this an attractive representation of Coyote Waits.
