There is so much new information to learn and ponder, we need watch these several times to absorb it all.

After seeing both programs on TV, bought the DVDs for my grandchildren.

The rapid rate of new exploration and discovery has prevented a comprehensive documentary overview of our solar system. But with the New Horizons fly-by of Pluto, NOVA was able to do so here. Not only includes fascinating facts and footage from each planet, but excellent summaries of our exploration of them, and the forces that shaped (and still shape) them. Among those agents of change are not only the sun, but the other planets, moons, and asteroids themselves. Loved the fact they spent some time discussing the asteroid between Mars and Jupiter, Cerus, and the amazing dance between the giant planets and their moons. The documentary discusses attributes of the planets (and some moons) pertaining to habitability (temperature, atmosphere, magnetic shares, etc.). And even answers that question about the difference between planet and ward planet. My quibbles are minor. Like any good show, it sort of leaves you wanting more. The perfectionist in me actually would have appreciated inclusion of some more of the boring encyclopedic data for each. For example, while each introduction to the planet includes the average distance from the sun and diameter, other facts like length of solar year, rate of rotation, gravity and atmospheric pressure relative to earths are discussed for some but not all. And answer to some more basic physics question like why do most of the solar systems planets lie on the same plane and why orbits are elliptical instead of perfect circles. A bit more on other Kuiper Belt objects including Plutos own moons, and the amazing fact that Plutos orbit brings it closer to the sun would have brought this closer to being definitive (for now at least). But again, these are minor quibbles. I absolutely would buy this again and hope that NOVA maybe comes out with supplementary episodes or even a second addition at some point.

I watched this program on TV a few months ago. I watched the program in its entirety and was grateful for its truth. Very cool. Very interesting. Planning to buy the DVD for me and extra copies for when my kids find my stuff. And, theyll pass it on to their next generations hopefully. Or, at least will wind up at a library or second-hand shop!

Goddard? no von Braun? a key German scientists the Soviets Russians rushed to capture? without whom NASA landing on the moon would not have been possible? go back to #school!

Like all Nova episodes, Rise of the Rockets is very well done and quite informative - it does quite a good job of explaining the rocket equation. Where it falls short is that it is featuring rockets that havent flown people into space yet. While SpaceX is well on its way to getting people into orbit (and should have by the first half of 2020), Blue Origin has a long way to go in having hardware that will reach this milestone as does SLS and Starliner is probably a year or more away from reaching orbit with people inside. Along with this, there is the aspirational goal of landing people on the moon in 2024. Most Nova episodes are timeless; they are excellent references/snapshots in time that will last forever. Rise of the Rockets doesnt meet this standard and technological achievements that are a year or three out. The 2025 version of this episode will be worth waiting for.

I wish it was on Blu Ray too

I viewed the entire series on the Planets on NOVA and was enthralled. I highly recommend owning your own copy, especially if you have children who might study the solar system in school!
