The Crimson Field

IIn a tented field hospital on the coast of France, a team of doctors, nurses, and volunteers work together to heal the bodies and souls of men wounded in the trenches of WWI. The hospital is a frontier: between the battlefield and home front but also between the old rules, hierarchies, class distinctions, and a new way of thinking. Kitty (Oona Chaplin, Game of Thrones), Rosalie, and Flora arrive as the hospital's first volunteer nurses and struggle to be accepted by the established medical team. The girls are flung headlong into a world for which nothing and nobody could have prepared them, but this is also an opportunity to break free of the constraints and limitations of their lives back home.

Executive Produced by Emmy® Award-winning Anne Pivcevic (Great Expectations, South Riding), written by Sarah Phelps (Great Expectations, Oliver Twist), and featuring Hermione Norris (MI-5) and Kevin Doyle (Downton Abbey), The Crimson Field tells the story of World War One's front line medics - their hopes, fears, triumphs, and tragedies.

This too-short series was a powerful production. Really enjoyed seeing some of the Downton Abbey characters in this production. I thought all the acting was top drawer.

Riveting, well-written drama
Review by Scwritergirl on 01/03/21 review stating Riveting, well-written drama
The Crimson Field is one of the best dramas I have seen on PBS. The characters are complex and well-developed and the plots are intricate and engaging. The writers of this series have done an excellent job weaving the horrors of war with the pathos and passions of everyday life. The acting is superb. I highly recommend The Crimson Field.

Piqued my curiosity
Review by Billie L. on 07/17/20 review stating Piqued my curiosity
The Crimson Field, set in 1915, begins with four volunteers who come from England to a field hospital in France to assist the nurses. Through the six episodes, we learn each volunteers secret reason for coming, and observe how each copes and forms attachments amid the political undercurrents in the hospital. The concluding episode does not end the story, but teases this viewer to speculate about what might happen next.

Great story - poor decision making
Review by City R. on 07/17/20 review stating Great story - poor decision making
Like the other reviewers, I greatly enjoyed the well written, well produced, spendidly cast and costumed show. The medical situation as depicted is in line with well documented information I have read. I was very disappointed that the series had no ending, left story lines hanging and was obviously the victim of either poor planning or studio politics. Either way, waht a shame for a series with the potential of a multi-season hit on a par with Downton Abby.

It is a very gripping show with unique and interesting characters!!! Was so disappointed to hear they may not make a second season, especially considering they left it at such a cliff hanger!!! Please bring it back for at least one more season, preferably more!!!

The Crimson Field

I really enjoyed this series but would never have watched it if I had known it would end so abruptly with no intention of a second season. It was quality television and I am miffed that I got caught up in the story and now there will be no resolution to the many story lines. #feeling cheated.

Can we see all 12 episodes?
Review by Fancynancy on 07/17/20 review stating Can we see all 12 episodes?
Does the DVD have only 6 or the reported 12 episodes? I have no use of the 6 episodes I watched with great interest. If there are 12 episodes, I will purchase it. PBS really blew it by discontinuing this series. Please reconsider. You will definitely have an audience!

Five stars for the story line. Excellent in every respect. Only one star for the DVD itself. The subtitles cannot be turned off. Very distracting.

Review by Dave on 07/17/20 review stating crimson field a well-crafted story
we bought this after seeing the series on PBS; we were very pleased with the acting, the story, the settings, and especially to see the Chaplin name still showing quality in film after 100 years. We would recommend this set of shows to all viewers of British period dramas. It was also refreshing to see a WWI backdrop for a change.

ANY chance of regrouping actors for continuation of Crimson
Review by Barb B. on 07/17/20 review stating ANY chance of regrouping actors for continuation of Crimson
My understanding is BBC needed the $$$ or time slot for other programs. This is so well done, seeing veteran BBC stars and introducing the US to Scots actor, Richard (Harris) Rankin. In a couple interviews, he was lavish w/ praise to wm. writers and complex character development that they all felt there were so many more stories to be told....talk about cliffhangers!

Why start and not continue?
Review by Bobbie on 07/17/20 review stating Why start and not continue?
I never expected to become so engrossed...so quickly in this series..only to have PBS decide to leave it hanging after only one season???Is it really so difficult to make a plan and stick to it?

Crimson Field: Blood stirring history lesson
Review by Keep S. on 07/17/20 review stating Crimson Field: Blood stirring history lesson
History as it should be told. We see how people of that time experienced the events. How they all were personally affected by them and how they dealt with them, both good and bad. We begin to understand that nothing really ever changes. Change occurs only in how things are being done.

A rare gem of filmmaking genius
Review by Nostalgia H. on 07/17/20 review stating A rare gem of filmmaking genius
This series if more than sterling in its content and its execution. The acting is more than superb, the story is intriguing, stalwart, and beguiling and it offers the viewer an experience rarely created for todays audiences. It is a travesty that the BBC has decided it should not be continued. The word masterpiece is overused in our world but The Crimson Field is much, much more than the word implies. The viewers of PBS will never see its like again.
