Depressingly Dark
Review by A on 08/25/20 review stating Depressingly Dark
I have not read the book, so do not have its story to compare this to. I found the movie excrutiatingly depressing and dark, holding out for a happy ending. Do not expect a light-hearted period film.

Too CREEPY!!
Review by Downtown A. on 08/25/20 review stating Too CREEPY!!
Was excited to watch this after Downtown Abbey. I was sure this would be another wonderful drama. Wrong! This was very CREEPY. Did not like this one bit. Thought story line was weak and just focused on the weird nephew. Two thumbs down!

LOVED the romantic parts. The thriller parts were unexpected but the actors the love between James Emily more than made up for it.

PBS does it again!
Review by A B. on 07/17/20 review stating PBS does it again!
Thank you PBS for yet another wonderful literary adaptation brought to the screen. I have watched this five times now and have recommended this movie to all of my friends. Yes, the cousin and his wife were very creepy, but that just added to the intensity that built throughout the story. The casting was perfect, especially Linus Raoche and Lydia Wilson. My Chick Flick friends have requested that we watch this again.

Review by Good B. on 07/17/20 review stating good movie....stays with you
Well this movie has stayed with me all day.....very thought provoking....with its twist and turns. It is really nice to have a female character that is forced to be independent and does her BEST to deal with the blows of life. Good characters ....some dark and thriller moments as well as tender and enduring ones. There are so few good movies out there ......I am truly grateful to PBS for airing this one !

A little weak but entertaining
Review by Firstmate on 07/17/20 review stating A little weak but entertaining
I read the book and found the tv adaption somewhat different. Emily is much more an intelligent and independent person than she is in the book and thank goodness Linus Roache made Walderhursts character a man you wouldnt mind marrying. I enjoyed watching their feelings for each other blossom into love. The nephew, his wife and her nurse were not creepy in the book but I guess the writers added a different story line for excitement. I enjoyed it enough to buy the video.
