Against the epic backdrop of France at a time of civil unrest, Les Miserables is the story of Jean Valjean (Dominic West, The Affair), a former convict unable to escape the shadow of his past life. His future is threatened by his nemesis, the chilling police officer and former prison guard Javert (David Oyelowo, Selma), who is determined to bring him to justice. Meanwhile, Fantine (Lily Collins, Rules Don't Apply), a working-class woman abandoned by her rich lover, is driven to increasingly desperate measures to provide for her young daughter. Their stories collide and as revolutionary violence ignites on the streets of Paris, Jean Valjean begins an epic journey towards self-acceptance, redemption and love.

Written by Andrew Davies (Pride & Prejudice), this powerful new adaption of Victor Hugo’s classic novel also stars Adeel Akhtar, Josh O'Connor, Ellie Bamber, Erin Kellyman, and Olivia Colman.

Episode 1 In 1815, France is on its knees after defeat at the battle of Waterloo. Jean Valjean is nearing the end of his sentence at the prison hulks in Toulon after serving 19 years for a petty crime and is released by ambitious prison guard Javert. Parisian seamstress Fantine is drawn to the charming Felix, but Fantine's friends worry her naivete may prove dangerous.

Episode 2 Fantine must leave Paris to find work. She is forced to make an unbearable decision to give her little daughter Cosette a better way of life, as she makes her way to Montreuil to find work in a factory. Jean Valjean is leading a new life as Monsieur Madeleine, mayor of the town, and owner of the factory. But life becomes unsettled when Javert becomes Montreuil's new police inspector.

Episode 3 Tormented Jean Valjean is forced by Javert and his own conscience to reveal his true identity. He is arrested and Javert believes he has got his man for good this time. Valjean breaks free from the guards to find Fantine in the infirmary, where he makes a promise to Fantine that changes everything.

Episode 4 In 1832, teenage Cosette and Valjean make a new start in Paris, though Valjean worries it may be dangerous. Marius Pontmercy, now a young law student, confronts his grandfather after he learns the truth about his late father and the revolutionary ideals he fought for under Napoleon. The Thenardiers plot their revenge against their old nemesis. Javert comes closer to recapturing Valjean than ever.

Episode 5 Paris is on the brink of revolt as unrest spreads through the streets, but despite these larger threats, Javert redoubles his efforts to find Jean Valjean. The increasingly paranoid Valjean warns Cosette that they must leave Paris soon. Marius makes a promise to his beloved Cosette.

Episode 6 The revolutionaries and the army prepare for the next assault, and the fighting becomes bloody and desperate. Jean Valjean is conflicted over Marius and Cosette's love and seeks Marius at the barricade. Javert confronts Valjean.

The best Les Miz ever!
Review by Jan V. on 05/30/22 review stating The best Les Miz ever!
This is the best adaptation of Les Miserables Ive ever seen! And, I think Ive seen them all. This is a must buy or at least a must see for any Les Miz fan. Actually, for anyone, for that matter. Its an extraordinary film but be prepared to cry. A lot! Itll break your heart but I think Victor Hugo would approve. Javert was outstanding! Valjean, Fantine, Cosette, Marius and everyone was fantastic. I cant say enough good things about it. Bravo!

Victor Hugo would applaud.
Review by Appalachian R. on 04/14/22 review stating Victor Hugo would applaud.
This six-part series is the quintessence of Hugos 365-chapter book. The 1862 novel studies the gradations between human law and ideals of justice, craven acquiescence and heroic determination. The film version does so with authenticity of setting, nuance of expression, and a gorgeous recreation of an era of intermingled brutality and hope. What Anne Hathaway did with song, this movie does with language.

I recommend this show.
Review by Rita on 04/14/22 review stating I recommend this show.
I have read Les Miserables, the novel, seen the play several times and also seen the movie and PBS mini-series. The mini-series was the first version I have seen in which the main character at the very end became Cosette. Not to give anything away, but her love for her father and her faith in him drove the plot and decided the outcome. It was very heartfelt, moving and inspiring.

Im Still Weeping
Review by Sweet F. on 12/18/21 review stating Im Still Weeping
Having read Gerard Durrells 3-book memoirs, I was delighted when the series ran true and amused when the script embellished the familys story. The actors were perfect in their roles, the scenery was marvelous, and Gerrys animals were delightful! (And Milo Gerry Parkers growth spurt since Season 3 was amazing!) My only problem with Season 4 was that, allowing for the earlier mentioned embellishments, I was hoping that Louisa and Spiro would marry and live happily ever after. Anticipating a wedding, I even dressed more formally than usual for Episode 6! Alas, I am still weeping...

Hmmm....
Review by Classy M. on 07/17/20 review stating Hmmm....
I absolutely love the young Endeavour. This whole series has been fantastic...the whole is cast is so perfect. I would like to see the guys run the show again though with Thursday back on top where he should be. Im not sure I get where the story is going with everyone working for a team of losers? It doesnt seem in character with Thursday hanging out with those guys no matter how desperate he is to get Win back. I really hope the writer puts things right again! Shaun Evans is superb as Endeavour of course...I was so happy to hear that there will be another season....I look forward to watching this every week and then fall into a mild depression after its gone!! Get the whole series if you havent already...the first episode (the pilot episode) is my very favorite...but its hard to choose just one because each one is so good.

I read The Bafuit Beagles many years ago followed by reading everything Gerald Durrell placed on paper. The family is a treasure to be loved and enjoyed in its candor and sense that preservationists of an exuberant spirit can be a gift and celebration to thous similarly inclined.

This is the best season of Unforgotten when the team attempts to find the killer of a young girl on the eve of the new millennium. The characters are well-developed and the ending in surprising and chilling. There is also a sub-story about the danger of social media. I have watched it twice and will watch again Im sure.

Very Disappointing Denouement; Season Finale is Too Cutesy
Review by Localworldtraveler on 07/17/20 review stating Very Disappointing Denouement; Season Finale is Too Cutesy
This sixth series first episodes follow the intriguing format and story, albeit maybe not quite as emotion-grabbing, as some of the very first seasons episodes. But the denouement for this season is far too short, including the Shoot-out at the OK Corral, like grasping at shoe strings to tie things together to fit within a time frame. This desperation to end on time continues through to the finale, which is somewhat cutesy. The prophetic, old drug house digs at the closing, was on-target if one knows the Morse series, but as a whole, the end of this 6th season series is very, very disappointing.

More Seasons of Endeavour, Please!!
Review by Classy M. on 07/17/20 review stating More Seasons of Endeavour, Please!!
I love this series....please give us at least a few more seasons! Im sure the actors want to pursue other opportunities; they are all so talented but it has been such a treat watching this. I look forward to watching it every week and ok...I must admit...I go into a little bit of a depression when I dont get my weekly dose of Endeavour Morse. (Joan...girl...what are you thinking??? Go after him!) All joking aside...this is such a great series to watch. Absolutely, my favorite. The writing is fantastic...the actors are so terrific...just such a joy to look forward to and watch...you know? Please keep this going at least a bit longer. (My only regret is that Im not watching this sitting in my Nanas front room on Cecil Street...but Ill watch Endeavour anytime, anywhere...
