American Experience: The Big Burn

Inspired by Timothy Egan's best-selling book, The Big Burn is the dramatic story of an unimaginable wildfire that swept across the Northern Rockies in the summer of 1910. The fire devoured more than three million acres in 36 hours, confronting the fledgling U.S. Forest Service with a catastrophe that would define the agency and the nation's fire policy for the rest of the 20th century and beyond. As America tries to manage its fire-prone landscapes in the 21st century, The Big Burn provides a cautionary tale of heroism and sacrifice, arrogance and greed, hubris and, ultimately, humility, in the face of nature's frightening power.

Story of pivotal conservation event
Review by Paul review stating Story of pivotal conservation event
As would be expected from any PBS production, The Big Burn is a well produced account of an event that was pivotal in helping to shape the early conservation movement. By interweving natural events (the massive northern Rockies forest fire) with social priorities and politics in the early 1900s, PBS showed us how the U.S. Forest Service and some of its key policies/priorities were born, and how this advanced the early conservation movement. For me, this production was especially timely as I was in a conversation with another person who was just learning about the early conservation movement. I bought this person a copy of this DVD and I look forward to our continued conversation.

Forest Fire!
Review by Forest L. review stating Forest Fire!
The story of the US Forest Service and how they had to battle both fire and politicians to protect our forests. A great tale made all the more interesting by the massive forest fires of today.
