One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote, a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change, debating the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. The battle also upended previously accepted ideas about the proper role of women in American society and challenged the definitions of citizenship and democracy.

Exploring how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for - and against - women’s suffrage, The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then - and continue to dominate political discourse today.

American Experience: The Vote
Review by Carol P. review stating American Experience: The Vote
I watched the broadcasts of these episodes on my local PBS station and began to think more personally how this story relates to my family. I had never thought about my grandmothers not being allowed to vote in early adulthood. My mother was 10 and my father was 15 when their mothers could finally exercise the precious right. I am buying this video so that my daughters and granddaughters can more fully appreciate the privilege. I liked how the account begins with some of the earlier efforts to gain the vote...from making known womens desire to vote to working to sway attitudes, developing political alliances, massing crowds for protests, and strategically persevering to finally achieving the goal. A good study for activists of any kind. Love all the original footage.

My grandmothers were part of this movement to get the right to vote for all women. Im so proud of them and I am purchasing this historical event DVD to cherish their accomplishment and show my daughter that freedom is not free and to stand up for what you believe in. Thank you PBS for this wonderful historical documentary for posterity.
