FRONTLINE: Drug Lord: The Legend of Shorty Producer: Simon Chinn, Andrew Mackenzie-Betty, Shireen Abbott, Val Campbell
In July 2015, drug kingpin Joaquín ""El Chapo"" (Shorty) Guzmán - the head of one of the largest drug cartels in history - escaped from a Mexican prison for the second time. But even before his most recent escape, Guzmán had become a legend in Mexico's long and bloody battle against its drug cartels: his Sinaloa cartel has been behind the violence responsible for thousands of deaths in Mexico in recent years, and drugs from its operations are sold throughout the U.S. and as far away as Europe and Africa.
In this feature documentary from the producer of Searching for Sugar Man and Man on Wire, filmmakers Angus McQueen and Guillermo Galdos set out to find and interview Guzmán prior to his 2014 capture. They chronicle Guzmán's rise - exploring what happened the first time he escaped from prison in 2001, landing an on-camera interview with his mother, and going inside his brutal and bloody empire. Drug Lord: The Legend of Shorty is a timely and engrossing portrait of one of the world's most wanted men.
