Great Estates of Scotland

This stunning series takes an in-depth look at the fascinating stories and inner workings of four of Scotland's most magnificent country estates, through the eyes of not only the current owners and the ghillies, gardeners, and housekeepers that keep them running, but also from the viewpoint of the paying guests who frequent these sumptuous country estates.

Episodes Include…
Inveraray Castle - For more than 500 years, Inveraray Castle has housed the Clan Campbell, and is now home to the 13th Duke of Argyll, His Grace Torquhil Ian Campbell, and his young family.

Dumfries House - Boasting one of the largest collections of Chippendale furniture in the world, this once-neglected mansion was dramatically brought back to life by HRH The Prince of Wales.

Kincardine Castle - Home to only two people, the 70-room castle and its 3,000-acre estate was once merely a trifling extravagance to its wealthy owners, but now presents a passionate but ongoing struggle to keep it afloat.

Rosslyn Chapel - Rife with myth and legend, many believe the mysterious Chapel to be home to the Holy Grail or the skull of St. Matthew, John the Baptist, or even of Jesus Christ.

Great Estates of Scotland Informative
Review by Kathie review stating Great Estates of Scotland Informative
I have only seen one segment of this great series, featuring the great estate of the Clan Campbell. It was beautifully photographed and very informative regarding the history of the family and their ancestral home, including a terrible fire in 1975 when all of the townsfolk rallied together to put out the fire and save the treasures inside the castle. Now restored, it is a great tourist attraction for young and old alike with a nice gift shop and tea room where the Duke will gladly sign a book about the history of the clan and their home, and quite a variety of events scheduled to attract people including an annual outdoor market filled with local items grown, created and for sale at an annual Best of the West event complete with live bands. They even discuss their concerns and wishes for the future of the region and disclose the fact that they do indeed have resident ghosts. By the end of the program I was ready and wishing I could leave for Scotland, where some of my mothers family hails from. I can hardly wait to see the rest of the DVD and am hoping that they will feature more great Scottish estates at some future time. Thank you again, PBS.
