The Sultan and the Saint Eight hundred years ago, Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt met on the bloody battlefields of the Crusades. The Crusades resulted in four generations of escalating conflict that was directed at Muslims, Jews, Orthodox Christians in the East, and eventually other Western Europeans. The conflict seemed to have no end until Francis of Assisi took one of the bravest risks in the history of peacemaking by crossing enemy lines to meet with the Sultan. The Sultan responded with one of the greatest humanitarian acts in the history of warfare by saving the Crusaders from starvation after the flooding of the Nile trapped their army of 50,000.

Based on new research and scholarship about that fateful meeting, The Sultan and The Saint tells one of the great, lost stories from history as two men of faith fought against a century of war and distrust in a search for mutual respect and common ground.

This is a beautifully made, absorbing documentary about an amazing historical event that has lessons for our modern world. I saw it on PBS when it aired recently. This film should be shown in churches, mosques, and schools! Uplifting.

A Magnificent and Inspiring Docudrama
Review by Randy review stating A Magnificent and Inspiring Docudrama
As an historian, and more importantly as one of so many seeking pathways to peace in a troubled world, I often lament the abundance of war stories and the lack of attention to peace makers in the media. This docudrama fills the gap with a beautiful tale of peace making in a highly improbable context. The Crusades were in reality, and have subsequently become in history and popular culture, manifestations of the rarely challenged notion that deep cultural traditions, and in particular the many divides separating Islam and Christianity, are unbridgeable chasms doomed to producing violent conflict. Challenging this dangerous misunderstanding and the resulting endless downward cycles of mutually victimizing violence is the tale told in The Sultan and the Saint. Part of the beauty of the film is the extensive list of credits to intellectual and financial contributors, most of Arabic and/or Islamic heritage and ancestry. If ever art represented an attempt to reach out with a welcome hand of understanding, this is it. How appropriate that the docudrama premiered just after Christmas. It is another (even greater) gift of the wisemen. Ever school child should see and study this.
